Bone Density Scan (Overview)

A dexa(dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) measured the density of mineral/calcium in the bones, and is also known as bmd(bone mineral densitometry). It involves lying on an exam table while x-rays with 2 different wavelengths go through the hip and the spine region to measure the amount of calcium in the bones to determine if some has osteoporosis or a high risk for broken hip or other bones.

What is the difference between a DEXA bone density scan and x-ray?

Dose and accuracy: The dexa uses a very small dose of x-ray compared to a regular x-ray and it is designed to measure density not produce a high quality picture. A regular x-ray is designed to produce a high quality picture and is a poor measure of density. ...Read more
