Have a bone contusion involving the antermedial femoral condyle. Been a month since injury. Some swelling, still very stiff. What's best treatment?
Time: If that is you're only injury (based on exam and MRI) than you need a few more weeks to let it heal. You can work on strengthening the muscles about the knee and regaining full motion. Depends: A bone bruise, as opposed to a bone fracture, does not need to be put in a cast in the sense of protection from displacement. But a cast can be useful to control swelling, potentially help with pain, and may make the hand more functional while you are recovering. Is a cast of the forearm to the tip of the fingers appropriate treatment for a bone bruise for the metacarpals?
Depends: That is a fairly extensive cast for a "bone bruise" as you put it. A bruise does not necessarily have to be immobilized at all; but sometimes we will to control swelling, improve function, or we are concerned there may be more to the injury. Conservative: Treatment- nsaids, warms packs /ace wrap application, physical therapy, immobilization with a brace.
