If you knee is normal, the pain can come from injured muscle and fascia in your thigh/leg. The injured areas will be tender, and there will be at least one ropey cord of muscle with knots in it. This pain is called myofascial pain. Seek a massage therapist, physical therapist who can do dry needling, or an accupuncturiest.

Imaging studies: You seem young for "bone on bone" disease (AKA advanced arthritis). Xrays would be helpful as an initial screening imaging study to check for arthritis of your knee. Not cancer: In my 25 years of being a rheumatologist… I have yet to see knee pain present has bone cancer. An x-ray would completely rule that out but it is extremely rare. Pain when exercising suggests a number of possibilities. There could be a problem within the joint. Is there any history of trauma? There could be tendinitis. The first thing to do is rest, anti-inflammatories if there is no contraindication such as stomach ulcers or kidney failure, time, heat.
