Sounds like flu: The test for flu is not very reliable. The CDC reports it is 40-70% sensitive, which means that a negative tests are falsely negative in 30-60% cases. Most clinicians report that the test is negative in ~50% of patients with clinical symptoms consistent with flu. Your symptoms are consistent with the flu, and it is most likely cause of these symptoms during winter months in a young adult. ...Read more

These are worrisome: Symptoms, and you should not be reassured because they seem to improve during the day. Many infections, which these symptoms are suggestive of, wax and wane and are cyclically worse during the day or night. I suggest your seek medical evaluation ASAP either through your Doctor's office or Urgent Care. The worse case scenario, meningitis, needs to be excluded. Good wishes:) ...Read more

Febrile illness: As long as he is staying the same or getting better, you could give it a few more days of watching him at home. If he seems to be getting worse in any way, however, I would take him to his doctor or to an urgent care center. In the meantime, plenty of fluids. You could use Tylenol or ibuprofen for fevers. Be sure to follow the directions on the box. If he worsens, see his doctor ASAP. Good luck. ...Read more

I have a fever, sore throat, headache, earache, body aches and chills what could this be?

Maybe strep, flu, etc.: Nose and throat symptoms can be from cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms only last 1-2 days, it was likely allergies, irritation, or a mild cold. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics "right away", which means within the first 3 days of strep symptoms. ...Read more

Warm fluids soothe the throat. Extra Vit C (1000 mg twice a day) will also decrease the length of time you'll have symptoms. Rest and sleep extra to give your body a chance to fight off the virus. ...Read more
