Need to see doctor.: I usually like to provide concrete answers to questions here, but your query requires some definitive testing. There could be many metabolic, infectious, nutritional, gastrointestinal, endocrine issues causing the problem with your weight. Your BMI is dangerously low. You need to initiate a local work-up with a doctor right away. Please. ...Read more

Is there a different BMI calculation for men and woman?

Limitations of BMI: The calculation is the same. Men tend to be taller, which to some extent offsets the greater weight due to muscle. The bmi is not the be-all end-all of body fat measurements. It is a useful index for most people, and in large populations, but individual people can be muscular, stocky, and otherwise have low body fat but still a high bmi. ...Read more

Diet and exercise: The key to losing weight is not a temporary diet but permanent changes. Sugars and simple carbs from grains esp. cause weight gain. I like Dr. Furhman's diet: http://tinyurl.com/ktampgg

Are women more likely to be insulin resistant, more than men, at the same bmi?

Are women more likely to be insulin resistant, more than men, at the same bmi?

Insulin resistance: At the same age, women are more likely to have higher bmi than men. If the bmis were the same, the major factor to account for differences would be sex related hormones. Since women clearly become more Insulin resistant (ir) after menopause, it seems that Estrogens protect against Insulin resistance. With the more dramatic decline in hormone levels in women, it is likely they have more ir. ...Read more

Forget numbers: The "ideal weight" and "body mass index" are subscientific especially in athletes. Your best weight is what looks and feels right to you and makes you able to compete successfully with your peers in athletics. If you have only a little body fat, that's great -- a man's best with none. Your weight might be that of a 6'2" sprinter; a healthy 6'2" muscled-up linebacker might be almost 2x your weight. ...Read more

Vigorous exercise: Vigorous exercise and losing about 10% of your body weight will help. You may wish to start slowly, but need to work up to vigorous exercise at least 30 minutes a day for 5-6 days a week. Alcohol intake may help, but I do not recommend it. ...Read more

What is the management of NASH and nafld in 24 y BMI of 19.5 healthy male no alcohol or meds or anything synthetic, even home made food?

No standard: The key will of course be increasing your level of aerobic fitness. I trust the diagnosis is right & that other causes of fatty liver / elevated enzymes (especially hepatitis c) have been ruled out. I hope you will not let somebody's idea that "synthetic is bad" limit your willingness to take medication. Betaine in beet juice, and of course vitamin e, are things to talk about with the team. ...Read more

Hello I'm 5'5 and my BMI is at 30 and a male, I feel like I've been losing weight. Even after eating a big meal no weight gain.. Could this be diabete?

Possible: Hi. Unintended weight loss can be seen with undiagnosed/untreated diabetes, but with other conditions as well. Is there a family history of diabetes? Do you have any other symptoms (up at night to pee, blurred vision, fatigue, thirst, etc)? Diabetes is easy to test for. Your BMI suggests possibility of unhealthy lifestyle. Eat healthily and exercise regularly, and of course, don't smoke. Good luck ...Read more
