Are you pregnant?: The cervix makes mucous nearly full time and the loss of the plug in no way endangers your pregnancy. You and the baby are just fine.

Mucus (Definition)

Like material that functions to moisten and protect inner body surfaces. The viscous slippery substance that consists chiefly of mucin, water, cells, and inorganic salts and that is secreted as a protective lubricant coating by the cells and glands of the mucous membranes. The free slime of the mucous membranes, composed of secretion of the glands, various salts, ...Read more

How likely is it to go into labor without losing mucus plug or having bloody show but strong contractions?

How likely is it to go into labor without losing mucus plug or having bloody show but strong contractions?

Labor: If you are having strong contractions 3-5 minutes apart for an hour, you could be in labor, even without bloody show or loss of mucous plug. If they are not that close or for that long, try a warm bath, drink lots of water and see what happens. However, when in doubt, go check it out.

Losing the mucus plug at week 35 and it's bloody is that a bad sign?

Losing the mucus plug at week 35 and it's bloody is that a bad sign?

No: I haven't found that mucous plug is a good predictor of when a woman goes into labor. Women lose it at 35 weeks all the time and then go on to deliver weeks and weeks later. If you're having contractions or bleeding, definitely go to l&d, but rest assured that you're unlikely to deliver premature. Have doctor check your cervix at next visit, that is a greater predictor and will yield more info.

Mucous plug: Doesn't really mean much. Increasing ctx with increased mucous flow would have more importance, but is still a minor sign of labor. Good luck.

Mgt: The source should be determined. I would recommend seeing your PCP. It may be from the tonsils or lower in the airway. If you have fever, chest pain, cough, a radiograph can be obtained tonight in the ED.

I woke up to having to use the restroom 2x & am pretty sure I lost my mucus plug within both times (clear/bloody liquid). At my appt yesterday my cervix was still closed. I now keep waking up to random cramping. My next dr visit isn't until next Thursday.

Assuming you are: Pregnant, since you know about 'mucus plug' and 'cervix', I would call your OB doctor and ask. A strong relationship between the patient and doctor is an absolute must in regards to having babies. Good luck and congratulations on this beautiful journey.

Can your mucus plug grow back?

Yes: The mucus plug is made up of thick cervical mucus that your body forms as soon as you're pregnant. The mucus protects and prevents anything from traveling up the cervix. 72 hours before labor, your cvx begins to change and the mucus loosens and mixes w/ blood from cervical change until it falls out as a "plug." Your cvx will continue to make mucus and you may have more discharge afterwards.

What does a mucus plug look like?

A glob of mucus: Will be thick not thin could be many differnt colors including blood tinged, mucus plug coming out near your due date is normal, if you are worried about anything then call your OB 24/7 just like my pts can call me and a recent study shows the ideal time to deliver is 39-40 for the baby, so don't go past your due date, I don't let any of my pts go past and they all thank me for it.

Can you make your mucus plug come out?

No: A larger amount of cervical mucus that is sometimes thicker and may be blood-tinged MAY be noticed by patients in their underwear, etc. As patients get closer to being term. But some patients never notice this, and that is normal too. Never put anything in the vagina/cervix or do anything to try to "make the mucus plug come out". This could cause infection, bleeding, or other serious problems.

Mucus Plug: The mucus plug seals off the entrance to the cervix to prevent infection from getting to the baby. It may dislodge a few weeks or a few hours prior to delivery. A new one can sometimes form. If the plug is more bloody or there is more bleeding than expected see your doctor.
