May be normal: Sinusitis is mostly caused by viruses. There is difficulty diagnosing bacterial sinusitis by symptoms alone but if symptoms are present >10 days, fever >102 with pus for first 3-4 days of symptoms or worsening of symptoms following viral infection - you may have a bacterial infection. Yes: Either RAST (replaced by ImmunoCap IgE) and prick skin testing can miss some food allergies. I often test a patient to the food itself when the history and test findings do not match. Recently I was about to challenge a young boy to walnut (history positive, skin test negative) when the skin test turned out to be highly positive to the actual nut. Low Humidity: In the winter, humidity indoors is lower because of use of heating without adequate humidity. This dryness in the air can dry out the membranes in the nose causing bleeding. Possible causes of: Thick saliva includes dehydration from antidepressants, dry mouth, genetics-cystic fibrosis or allergic reactions. Gritty eyes and mucus mixed with blood are due to dryness.
