Blood Test Lupus
Yes: There is a simple blood test for lupus called an "ana" (for antinuclear antibody). It is positive, or detectable, in about 20% of healthy people, so it is only helpful as an initial screening. A doctor can ask questions, perform a physical exam and order further tests to figure out if a positive test indicates lupus. A negative test is very reassuring. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Petechiae rashes on upper chest. What could this be? I have had blood test for lupus and sjogren's syndrome but all came back negative except C3 level
Are they petechiae?: Real petechiae do not lose their color when you press down on them. With your dry eyes and joint pain, sjogren and lupus labs are in order. What's your platelet count, did you bleed badly during a dental procedure, and did your physician try something simple like a capillary fragility / tourniquet test? If it really petechiae without signs of clotting trouble, a dermatology consult is in order. ...Read more

What is the likelihood of a false negative herpes type specific blood test with background of lupus (sle)?
About 0% to 9%: Quest diagnostics' website states that their herpes type-specific IgG antibody test is 91-100% sensitive, so there are a few false negative results. A repeat test can be done 4-6 weeks later, if worried about a false negative. Lupus should not affect the result, but if a person is on strong immuno-suppressive therapy, his antibody production may be blocked, which may make test results unreliable. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Random aches migrating around body (muscles/joints). Blood test cleared me of lupus, thyroid, Lyme etc. Doctors think anxiety. Is this a likely cause?
Achy, fatigued, hair loss with no answers from doctor. Thyroid blood test is ok- Is lupus a possibility and what blood test to ask for?
No news is good news: No answers from doctors because there is no definitve answer, if any doctor suspects a specific condition he/she would work on it, fatigue and hair loss aren't only common for thyroid disease or lupus, several other conditions share them, and could simply be without a specific reason, at any rate, ANA screen if negative, is a good test for ruling out lupus, wish you wellness, ...Read more

False positive for Lupus, now positive for HCV, waiting on blood test to confirm. Could HCV cause a false + for lupus?
Yes, but....: Almost all lupus patients have anti-nuclear antibodies in their blood at significant levels, there are other blood tests, but the whole clinical picture needs to be considered before a diagnosis is made, and since no one truly knows what lupus is, some people carry the diagnosis of "borderline / questionable" lupus, and may or may not get treated. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
