How do you keep your blood sugar high without eating?

How do you keep your blood sugar high without eating?

Not enough insulin: We all store glucose (sugar) in our liver. Normally, when we have eaten, we put out Insulin that tells the liver that it does not need to release the glucose that has been stored. However, a patient with diabetes who is deficient in Insulin will not have adequate Insulin to do this, so the liver will continue to put out glucose even though the blood sugar is high/. ...Read more

Normal sugar levels: For children and non-pregnant adults, normal blood sugar (glucose) level is considered <100 mg/dl in fasting morning state, and <140 mg/dl after a meal. How is it possible that my blood sugar high when i haven't eaten?

How is it possible that my blood sugar high when i haven't eaten?

Insulin deficiency: Even for people with type 2 dm, relative Insulin deficiency is the reason blood sugars go up. When fasting, your body has to be able to respond to the Insulin you make in order to stop the liver from making its own supply of glucose. If one is Insulin resistant or has undertreated type 1/type 2 dm, there isn't enough Insulin to turn the liver's glucose production down- it causes hi fasting sugar. ...Read more

I've caught my blood sugar high (272, 286) but it usually had a tendency to run low not high. I don't take insulin. Could something be malfunctioning?

Yes, two things: First, your body -- as a glucose above 200 indicates diabetes and needs attention from your physician. Why are you on corticosteroids which can partially be to blame for your high glucose? By the way, no one's blood sugar runs "low" unless on meds for diabetes. Nex, your mind -- of course something is malfunctioning. You're not thinking clearly if you don't realize you need to see your doctor now. ...Read more
