The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body's cells, and blood lipids (in the form of fats and oils) are primarily ...Read more
70-99mg/dl fasting: Normal blood sugars are between 70-100mg/dl when you are in a fasting state (at least 8hrs). Diabetes is present when the number hits 126mg/dl in the fasting state. When the sugars fall in between these ranges (100-125), this would be considered impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes (borderline diabetes). ...Read more
100mg/dL or less: Physicians measure patient's fasting blood glucose. This is the blood sugar taken when the patient hasn't had food or drink for at least 8 hours. "normal" is considered to be 100mg/dl or less. There is a little leeway before a level is high enough to raise concern and necessitate intervention though. A non-fasting blood sugar - or random should be less than 150... Especially 2 hours after you eat. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

I'm type 2 diet controlled, I have a blood test every 6 months. What to use to check my sugar levels day to day?
Yes: If the sample is obtained when the blood sugar is low and collected and run appropriately (in a hospital lab) it can be diagnostic for hypoglycemia. Tests can also be done for causes. Other ways to look for low sugars include continuous glucose monitoring systems and hemoglobin a1c that evaluates average blood sugar over time. Glucose meters are not usually useful in diagnosing hypoglycemia. ...Read more

How do you know if you have low or high blood sugar of if you have diabetes, without a blood test?
Bottle of fizzy club orange with lots of sugar about half hour before i got blood test.. How would this effect it?
Depends on test: If you were having a blood glucose test, this will cause it to be artifactually high. A recent blood test showed my mean blood glucose at 114, yet the clinician said all was normal. Should I be concerned? Get a 2nd opinion maybe?
Need clarification: If your clinician said it was the mean glucose, i suspect s/he did an A1c (a way to look at the average sugar over past few months). 114 is equiv to an A1c of 5.6, which is upper limit of normal. If 114 was a fasting glucose, that is in the pre-diabetes range (abnormal). Repeat testing is advised to confirm either. If you are pre-diabetic, take this seriously-full diabetes can be prevented/delayed. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers
I went to the dr. Today. My last blood test said i was hypoglycemic at the time. I do have symptoms, when i've checked my blood sugar it's normal?
Blood sugar levels: Vary somewhat throughout the day; elevations may be expected after a meal but should return to normal within a couple hours. If u experience low sugar symptoms & readings between meals, may be in early stages of diabetes. Can try eating 6 or more minimeals a day (protein, good fats, low glycemic carbs) & avoid sugary foods & drinks, which raise bs rapidly & allow levels to drop rapidly. C doc. ...Read more
