Tiny trace amount of blood on q-tip after using to clean ear?

Q-Tips bad idea, too: Big; pack cerumen (ear wax) deeper into canal (the portion you do not see come out). Only the middle third of the ear canal skin secretes waxes which helps prevent infection; slowly remove particles/bacteria from ear canal in association with chewing. This skin is also quite thin, over bone; can easily be traumatized. Better strategy: work shampoo into each canal with finger tip at each hair wash. ...Read more

Likely scraped canl: You likely scraped the ear canal but could have punctured the ear drum. It is worth an office visit during regular hours. We encourage parents to avoid Q tips or the "safety Q tips" because they are not. Wax is made in the outer half of the canal and these just push it further in. They are ineffective befoe the teen years at the earliest. ...Read more

Hi, I was cleaning my 3 year Old's ear with q tips this morning and when I pulled the q tip out there was blood on the bud. Is this bad?

Possibly: Q tips can cause a hole in the ear drum. Alternatively it may be an abrasion to the ear canal. Have him examined and keep the ear canal dry. All the best. Avoid Q tips or anything smaller than your elbow. Kids are very mobile and often move during this process. ...Read more

I saw blood in my ear when I cleaned with q tip? Is this normal?

Blood not normal: Blood in the ear is not normal. However, the blood is not necessarily dangerous. The skin in the ear can be quite sensitive. So, if you are cleaning too aggressively, it can bleed. Also, if you have had an infection or injury, there can be bleeding. The best thing to do would be to have a physician look into the ear. Visualization of the skin and ear drum will likely give you an answer. ...Read more

Injury from Q tip: If it was bright blood, it came from using the q tip. It is not necessarily dangerous but if pain develops seek care for external otitis. It is not a good idea to use q tips to clean ears because of the risk of traumatic injury that can be come infected. ...Read more

How are ya? I now know not to use q tip on inner ear but whilst attempting to clean left ear I had sudden pain, blood on qtip. Should I wash ear now?

No. ..: The main risk is that of a perforated eardrum. See http://patient. Info/health/perforated-eardrum for symptoms and management of this. Keeping the ear canal dry is a mainstay of management. If just an abrasion to the ear canal, this should heal without cleaning. If headache, fever or discharge see your Dr. ...Read more

Cleaned ear last night. Caughed and had slight pain. Cleaned ear tonight with qtip to find dry blood. Should I worry? No other symptoms & hearing OK

Probably not: First: don't clean the inside of your ear canal with a Q-tip! They should only be used to clean the outer/visible part of your ear itself. Putting a Q-tip inside the ear canal can force wax and dirt/debris deeper into the canal and can lead to impaction (a plug) of the ear canal wax (cerumen). Also, the Q-tip can injure the wall of the canal and can cause some minor bleeding like you had. ...Read more

I cleaned my ear & I think I cleaned to deep I heard a POP sound, I took the q tip out and the cotton was full blood, now its just Lil water coming out?

Q-tips terrible tool: For ears, too big & just pushes most wax (cerumen in medical jargon) even deeper compounding the problem. Simply working soap/shampoo & water into ear canal when washing hair both far safer & more effective. Unfortunately, sound like you may have ruptured your ear drum. Best see a good ENT specialist very soon to improve the odds of better healing/repair & less long term damage to hearing. ...Read more

Aching in my left ear and pain on the left side of my neck. There is blood on the q-tip when I clean them. What could it be?

Outer ear problem: It could be inflamed, if you slept on it that night. You could have some hard wax in the canal that got compressed from sleeping on it, causing irritation and bleeding. Nocturnal tooth grinding can cause intense pain, mild swelling around the affected jaw joint next to the ear. Outer ear infections usually are extremely painful, the ear is blocked, and it drains pus which can be bloody. See md. ...Read more

I felt like wax was dislodged in my ear and shifting so I used a q tip and there was blood. Should I see a doctor?

Yes there are ways: To get wax out without traumatizing your ear with a Q-tip -- which is why you saw blood. You may also have an infection of the external canal. I hope you didn't unwittingly puncture your ear drum - symptoms for that would be lots of fluid loss, hearing loss and pain. Go see a family physician or healthcare provider. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

My 18 month old son jammed a q-tip in his ear. He cried for a few minutes and I just noticed a little blood. Is this an ER visit?

I wouldn't: I seldom recommend you go to the area where car crashes/heart attacks/gunshot wounds & weird infectious diseases congregate. This is a routine office visit to identify the source of the blood. It can and should wait until you can see someone that evaluates kids on a regular basis. ...Read more

I just used a q tip In my ear because my mom saw black and when she pulled it out there was blood and ear wax but when I put the other end blood was o?

Scratch: The likely source of the blood is abrasion to the ear canal wall caused by the q-tip, if not at this time, then previously. In general, we advise you never use a q-tip or any solid device in your ear as it is a blind procedure and you're likely to impact the wax (push it against the drum). Liquids are okay like warmed oil, hydrogen peroxide, or cerumenex. Doctors use an otoscope or mirror to see. ...Read more

Exam needed: Itching of ear canal combined with some discharge is consistent with otitis externa, treated with ear drops containing antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory ingredients (cortisone type) such as cortisporin otic. However since you drew blood and have earache, an examination of the external and middle ear via an otoscope is recommended to look for significant trauma to the ear canal and drum ...Read more

It feels like I have water in my ear tried over the counter drops and when I cleaned my ear a few hours later there was blood on the qtip what to do?

Ear fullness: Please do not use Q-tips in your ear. You can not see what you are doing and can cause trauma and bleeding and possibly damage the ear drum. You may have fluid behind your ear drum (which is why OTC is not working, it is not in the canal) and could use antihistamines and or drops with steroids to relieve the fluid. Follow up with doc /urgent care ...Read more
