Pretty low: Conventional assessment of colorectal cancer (CRC) risk largely involves detection of non-dysplastic adenomatous polyps. Standardized sensitivity was 48.2%, for CRC stages I-IV, values were 35.0%, 63.0%, 46.0% and 77.4%, respectively. Specificity was 91.5%. Sensitivity for advanced adenomas was low (11.2%). A friend has been told they have colon cancer, diagnosed via a tumour marker blood test, high cea, CT scan showed contained mass. Is this conclusive?

A friend has been told they have colon cancer, diagnosed via a tumour marker blood test, high cea, CT scan showed contained mass. Is this conclusive?

No, but...: But very suspicious for colon cancer. If your friend is similar in age to yourself a mass in the colon on ct scan is cancer until proven otherwise. And cea levels can go up for other reasons but, given the mass, they would strongly favor cancer. But to answer your question "no"... They are not definitive. You would need a piece of the mass under a microscope to prove definitively its cancer. ...Read more

I just moved my bowels and it was really hard coming out I saw a streak of blood. Worried its colon cancer?

Probably not cancer: blood streaking on a hard bm is more likely related to the local trauma of passing stool. blood mixed inside stool is much more concerning. I would recommend a bowel program using a high fiber diet and a diet supplement like Benifiber 3-4 times a week. When stools are no longer hard, if you still see blood, or if there is a family history of colon cancer then you should have a colonoscopy ...Read more

Maroon stools suggest a bleeding problem which could be related to vascular malformation or internal hemorrhoid. Cancer as a cause at age 20 rare. If problem persists then colonoscopy indicated. ...Read more
