Blood in sputum: If it is streaks of blood and not clots, likely from coughing irritation. If it is clot/large amount of blood(teasppon pure blood) it is significant and you should seek immediate medical attention ( TB, cancer, blood clot). We generally don't worry too much about sputum color these days as it's not useful in determine if virus or bacteria. Cough can also be due to allergies, heartburn & medication side effects. Yes...: The most common cause for hemoptysis, coughing blood, is bronchitis. You need to have this evaluated and treated so see your family doctor. If they cannot help you, then see a lung doctor.
