Seek care: Could be strep and that should be treated. If it is strep and is not treated you would be at risk of getting rheumatic fever later. Just stop in for a rapid strep test a your doctors office. If negative it might be early and should be followed by a dna test or a culture for confirmation of the negative rapid test. Could be either: Symptoms of flu and routine viral respiratory disease overlap. If it is within the first couple days then get viral cultures for flu and start tamiflu (oseltamivir) if positive to shorten and decrease illness. Otherwise treat symptoms. ...Read more

I have a fever and below normal temperature, sore throat and I am coughing up blood tinged phlegm. Pain inside right upper chest.?

Depends: An md consult would not be out of order at your age. It is likely pharyngitis or bronchial spasms secondary to a moderate respiratory infection or even allergies. If irritated enough by coughing, a small amount of blood could look more foreboding mixed in with phlegm or saliva. By the way fever= higher temperature. Feel better! ...Read more

Seasonal flu: Is very common viral infection. Usually the condition resolves on its own with home care. Drink water and get a good rest. NSAIDs (e.g. Aleve, Advil) or Tylenol (acetaminophen) are also recommended every 6 hours. If concerned, see your PCP for examination. ...Read more

Dr. Can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). A couple days of throat lozenges and tylenol (acetaminophen) can decrease throat pain. ...Read more

Probably ok: Probably from the sore throat. This is probably more common that we think it is since most people don't cough this stuff out. As long as your breathing is ok and it does not recur then I wouldn't worry. ...Read more

URI: You are in the midst of an upper respiratory infection. The productive cough indicates there is moderate phlegm inside your lungs. Drink lots of water to help thin it out. Drink hot tea/honey for the cough and consider some cilantro (usually I do pico de gallo) to help bring up mucous. See an MD soon to make sure it's in recovery.

Possibilities...: Possible causes of your symptoms include post-nasal drip leading to sore throat and bronchospasm leading to cough. This may be due to a viral infection, including viral bronchitis. Since this is likely a viral infection, antibiotics would be ineffective. If there is no improvement over the next week, or if symptoms worsen, see your doctor. If you smoke, you need to quit asap! ...Read more

Could be Allergies: Thick yellow mucus in the morning could be secondary to either outdoor or indoor allergens. See an Allergist for further testing and evaluation. Can try OTC steroid nasal sprays, saline rinses and antihistamines to see if symptoms improve. Usually allergies are also associated with sneezing, itching, post nasal drip, eye symptoms, etc. Cold is transient and will resolve with symptomatic management ...Read more

Sore throat 2-3 days, no fever, thick yellow phlegm spit out 10 days. Cleared but started again with sore throat and yellow phlegm after a few days?

Possible causes: There are a few possible causes. If you had no fever, the likelihood of Strep infection is less than a viral cause. It can sometimes take two to three weeks to clear an influenza infection. If you have fever or persistent symptoms, I would advise a Strep test at your PCP's office.
In the meantime, rest, drink warm fluids and monitor your temperature. ...Read more
