Immediate evaluation: You need to be seen immediately! To to your primary care doctor or ER and get blood work, X-ray, and will most likely need a Cat Scan (CT) of your sinuses. You are right: What you're describing certainly does sound like a sinus infection. The blood in your mucous can happen especially when there's a lot of inflammation in your nose. I have a sinus infection and I am on cefdinir sine a week. I have 3 more days of the course. I can breath better and nose is not as stuffy as it was but i get blood in my phlegm. Is this serious?

Not unusual: Are you on any other treatments beside the antibiotic. Some nasal sprays can cause minor bleeding or dry membranes from decongestants. The blood may be from the back of your nose and should resolve when the infection is gone. It is also possibile you are coughing up the blood, again which is could happen with infection, but if it doesn't resolve should be evaluated by your doctor. ...Read more

Sinusitis?: Without knowing exactly where the blood and green mucous is emanating from it is impossible to know if you have sinusitis. This is generally clinical diagnosis made by nasality of speech, pain and swelling over the sinuses, congestion and purulent nasal discharge. Sounds like it: 7-10 days of discolored drainage is typical criteria of sinus infection. Most with infection have facial pressure or pain and nasal congestion as well. Sounds like it is time to see a physician and possibly treat this with antibiotics. ...Read more

May be normal: Sinusitis is mostly caused by viruses. There is difficulty diagnosing bacterial sinusitis by symptoms alone but if symptoms are present >10 days, fever >102 with pus for first 3-4 days of symptoms or worsening of symptoms following viral infection - you may have a bacterial infection.
