DVT: 20yo is kinda young to have blood clots in legs but it's not that rare either, especially in those w/genetic risks eg thrombophilia, taking estrogen-based birth control, have had recent major surgery or traveled extensively w/o much movement eg transoceanic flight. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) can loosen & move to lungs where they're deadly eg pulmonary embolism. Go to ER immediately for treatment

What makes blood clot?

What makes blood clot?

Clotting factors: Liver makes specific proteins called clotting factors which when stimulated with injury to a blood vessel (cut, blunt trauma) results in a domino effect and blood clots to seal the bleeding vessels. Some have a genetic lack of certain factors which make them bleed, or others more susceptible to forming blood clots.

What does blood clots mean?

What does blood clots mean?

"Blocked Pipes": Blood contains proteins which cause the blood to congeal when outside of blood vessels. This can be life-saving following trauma but can be life-threatening if the clotting mechanism is activated inside a blood vessel, leading to the obstruction of flow to the brain (stroke), heart muscles (mi), or lungs (pulmonary emboli), to name a few. Rx hinges on opening the blockage asap+/-blood thinners.

How do blood clots usually form?

How do blood clots usually form?

Blood clot causes: We doctors are taught to remember virchow's triad: blood vessel injury, stasis, and hypercoagulability. The first refers to things like surgery and catheters, the second to slow blood flow due to immobility or compression on a blood vessel, and last to things that make the clotting system more active like birth control pills and hereditary disorders that make the blood more likely to clot.

No: I assume that you mean to ask if it is normal to develop blood clots when taking oral contraceptive pills (ocp). The risk of developing blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, coronary artery thrombosis) is slightly increased in persosn taking ocp, however, this is not normal. The risks are particularly increased in patients with acquired or genetic clotting tendencies.

What can be done for blood clots?

Prescription medicin: Blood clots are dangerous and a physician should be seen immediately. If the clot is in the leg a doppler test can confirm it and a physician will prescribe meds to thin the blood and help prevent it from going to the lungs. Initially you should not be active because you do not want to dislodge it and cause it to travel in your bloodstream. Blood thinners will be taken for at least 3 months.
