Will my blood clot put me at risk for a heart attack or a stroke?

Will my blood clot put me at risk for a heart attack or a stroke?

It depends: Heart attack develops from heart artery blockage. If blood clot develops in the coronary artery, yes heart attack results. On the other hand, if the blood clot is in the veins, there is no need to worry about "heart attack". Blood clot in the leg veins can travel to the heart and can block pulmonary arteries. This is pulmonary embolism, not "heart attack" as I understood the term. ...Read more

Myocardial Infarction (Definition)

Myocardial Infarction means some of the heart muscle dies because of insufficient oxygen supply. Most often this occurs because the coronary artery is blocked by plaque & clot. Other causes include tears in the artery wall, extremely high oxygen demand (eg, rapid arrhythmia, heart valve disorder, or severe systemic illness.) Prompt treatment can minimize heart damage & ...Read more

Slight risk: Birth control pill does increase the risk of blood clot and heart attack, but it is still low. The big risk is if BCP is combined with nicotine. So please do not smoke and use BCP. Otherwise you should be fine as long as there is no family history of heart disease and you don't have other risk factors. ...Read more

What are my chances of getting blood clots, heart attack or stroke on birth control?

What are my chances of getting blood clots, heart attack or stroke on birth control?

Good question: I'm sure others will answer this but here's my shot: if you're <35 and don't smoke, your chance is very low. It's usually said that you have a higher chance of dying from pregnancy. If you smoke, you shouldn't use bcps. If you're getting close to 40, the odds start shifting. We'll see what the others have to say.... ...Read more

Sharp paidunder finger nail and ache allover my body have had prior blood clots and heart attack DVP and have a filter?

See your doctor: While an embolic event might cause pain in the hand, this would not be from the DVT in the absence of another heart anomaly. Emboli to the hand usually come from the arterial system or from the heart. You should see your doctor to determine if you need an evaluation for this.
Your symptoms may also be unrelated to emboli and I would suggest a check-up with your doctor. ...Read more

My father has had a heart attack, blood clot, and is waiting to have a aortic dissection surgery. Can a heart rate of 130 temporarily be bad?

Chest pains for a week. Went to ER no heart attack. Blood clot blood work was 500. Sent me home. Today leg is hurting and slightly swollen. ER again?

Thrombosis: Detecting a developing blood clot is a challenging problem in the early stages. Pain and swelling are pretty good symptoms once it is developed. The relation to your chest pain is still uncertain. You could have been showering small emboli to your lungs, even with a value of 500 (which is likely below the threshold for your lab.) Further radiologic study (leg US, etc) may help clarify things. ...Read more

Does Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) have a higher risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack than other birth control pills?

Does Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) have a higher risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack than other birth control pills?

Slightly: The answer is a bit more complex. All birth control pills slightly increase your risk for blood clots. Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and yasmin, have a Progesterone that has a sligtly higher risk then other birth control pills. That being said, the risk of blood clots during pregnancy is ten fold higher then this, yet most women don't avoid pregnancy because of that risk. The fda has not pulled Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) off the market. ...Read more

Am I less likely to have a heart attack? I have autoimmune itp and I was wondering since my blood has a hard time clotting if I'm less likely.

ITP is prothrombotic: Autoimmune itp is a pro-thrombotic disorder; the chance of abnormal clots is always there. Abnormal blood clots usually tend to happen either in the veins or in the arteries. Watch for deep veins thrombosis first; but you are not protected from a coronary event by your itp ; low platelet count. ...Read more

How are hemophilia, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and stroke related to blood clotting?

How are hemophilia, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and stroke related to blood clotting?

Opposites: Hemophilia is a defect of blood coagulation such that the blood does not clot. Heart attacks and strokes are a result of clots forming in the arteries feeding the heart and brain respectively. These latter clots can be formed locally due to damage to the blood vessels or an increased clotting tendency, or from clots that embolize from somewhere else in the body. ...Read more

Why do you ask?: Often there's none until it's too late. There are clinical situations in which it's expected -- famously, damaged valves, atrial fibrillation, or a previous myocardial infarction. An ultrasound / echocardiogram is often the key. Your PVC's, headache and tachycardia are almost certainly not due to an intracardiac thrombus. ...Read more
