I generally: Treat acute diverticulitis with 2 weeks of antibiotics and to stay on a no to low fiber diet for 6 weeks from diagnosis. I do not recommend starting psyllium before the 6 weeks have elapsed and you are symptom free as you risk a more severe recurrence during those 6 weeks with possible complication of perforation, abscess or fistula development, all of which are emergencies. ...Read more

Based on an analysis of 8 large studies, it was noted that consumption of 10.2 g psyllium/d lowered serum total cholesterol by 4% and LDL cholesterol by 7% . Yes: that is not unusual if a person ingests a lot more fiber than usual all at once. This is why when we advocate increasing fiber that we recommend that people start slowly and build it up. Benefiber may be: easier to take. The powder in a can format is easier and cheaper than capsules and you'll get a larger dose which which will help make you regular.
