I had 2 hydascans after gallbladder surgery for spasms in the bile duct, showed partial blockage probably SOD, 1 doctor said the test were a waste?

Not a "waste": I disagree with the "waste" comment...It is important to determine if a residual stone is blocking the COMMON BILIARY DUCT which also drains your PANCREAS. If youy symptoms continue see a GASTROENTEROLOGIST!

Hope this helps

Gallbladder (Definition)

The gallbladder is a sac-like structure located under the right lobe of the liver. It is attached to the common bile duct via the cystic duct. Gallbladder had gangrene and ruptured during surgery. Bile duct was cut in half and is draining bile, has to stay in for 3 months. What is the outlook?

Bile duct injury: It sounds like you had a very hostile gallbladder but to this point things have been repaired and that you have a t-tube in place. That tube help strain the bile and people helps prevent stricture. Overall the outlook is good and it is rare for people to have major complications or long-term effects after surgery in which the ball that was repaired. Routine follow-up as recommended by your surgeon will however be important to make sure that any problem that arises is attended to a timely fashion. ...Read more

Is there a way to decrease the ammount of bile salts your body makes after gallbladder surgery?

Unfortunately no.: No. However, the reason you are probably having diarrhea is bile is constantly being introduced into the small intestine and not being completely reabsorbed before entering the large intestine. This causes irritation of the right colon and thus diarrhea. You can bind the bile by taking metamucil and thus decrease the irritation. ...Read more

After complicated gallbladder surgery 4 days ago the tube is draining too much bile, about a litre a day. What could cause this?

Depends: Hi, depending on where the tube is this could be normal or abnormal. If the draining tube is meant to drain the bile (eg-as a means of protecting a bile duct anastomoses) then it's normal as the liver can produce large quantities of bile. On the other hand if this tube is in the abdominal cavity ; is just supposed to drain excess fluid then it indicates a bile leak ; is abnormal. Talk 2 surgeon. ...Read more

Developed bile gastritis after gallbladder surgery over 7 months ago. Will it happen always now or can the body still adjust in future?

Body can adjust: The body can still adjust, but it is also quite possible that the two are unrelated, even though the timing is related. The analogy is some event on earth happening at the same time as a falling star. While the timing is together, there is no cause and effect relationship. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Quite common: When your gallbladder is gone its function for STORAGE of bile which continues to be made by your LIVER is also gone and until the bile system ofr ducts enlarge to take over the storage function (3-6 months usually) the bile goes directly in your stomach and this may be a IRRITANT!!! Ask your PCP for a diet and some medication which will help this situation! Hope this helps explain it!

I had gallbladder surgery on 4/21 and keep getting told that the burning "acid" I have is just GERD. I'm on acid inhibitor x3 daily @ 40 mg no relief. I believe I have bile leak can you help?

Cholestyramine: When you have your gallbladder out bile is continuously sent into your digestive tract. In some patients this does not cause a problem. In others it can cause severe reflux and diarrhea. In those patients often a bile acid binder like cholestyramine can be used to help relieve symptoms. I suggest you talk to your doctor to see if this may be helpful to you. ...Read more

What causes your common bile duct to be dilated 12mm when you don't have a gallbladder.

Sphincter muscle: At the end of the duct, just at it's entry to the intestine. There is a circular muscle that closes off the duct when bile is not needed to digest foods. Since the liver never stops making bile, it will build up inside the bile ducts and stretch them out when a gallbladder has been removed. A stone could block the duct but will produce symptoms. The stretched open ducts happen without symptoms. ...Read more

Before and after my gallbladder removal my bile duct has been dilated even still a year later, this causes a lot of pain, will this go away itself?

Depends: Ask your doctor how dilated the bile duct is. After gallbladder removal, it is normal to have a slightly enlarged bile duct. Additionally, as you age, your bile duct usually enlarges a bit, usually about 1 mm per 10 years. If you have stones in your bile duct, you certainly need to have this addressed. Finally, proving that your pain is from the dilated bile duct is quite difficult. ...Read more
