Teen girl, freq bowel problems. 3 weeks ago had abnormal period (longer, no bloating, etc). 3 days after it ended, constipation and facial weight gain?

Gastrointestinal: Worse than having bowel problems is worrying about bowel problems, and they tend to tumble over each other. Good bowel health involves drinking adequate fluids, 6-8 cups/day, having good fiber intake, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and daily exercise. Working on overall health will help your body self-regulate. ...Read more

Unintentional weight gain, severe pain in right lower back, constipation, bloating period supposed to come in 2 weeks, negative pregnancy test?

Misinformed?: A pregnancy test done before a fetus has grown big enough to have chemical and blood connection to the mother is wasted dollars and energy. Your symptoms represent infection, not pregnancy. But, if your period does not start in two weeks then you can and should do a pregnancy test. ...Read more

Gi issues that stay for weeks, go, & return: bloating, gas after food, nausea after drinking h2o, slow weight gain, alternating constipation/ thin poo?

Nonspecific symptoms: Your symptoms are nonspecific & may be due to gi-related inflammation, infection, motility disorders, or even extra-intestinal pathology. However, irritable bowel syndrome should be strongly considered & appropriately evaluated given your age, duration of distress, alternating stool pattern, & associated functional-sounding complaints. I recommend you see a gastroenterologist (gi specialist). ...Read more

Could my stomach ulcer be the cause of my weight gain, (and inability to loose it) bloating, burning upper stomach, constipation, and dhiarria?

Could my stomach ulcer be the cause of my weight gain, (and inability to loose it) bloating, burning upper stomach, constipation, and dhiarria?

No.: Ulcers don't cause weight gain, although they can certainly cause burning in the stomach area. Bloating, constipation and diarrhea are likely separate from the ulcer. Any time I hear this many abdominal complaints, what comes to mind is the probable need for dietary change, at the very least. You could have irritably bowel syndrome or several other problems as well. See your doctor. ...Read more

I am a survivor of breast cancer and my mother died of ovarian cancer. I have been experiencing a lot of bloating, constipation and weight gain. What should I do?

Abdominal exam first: The obvious concern is to first rule out an ovarian cancer- with a good gyn and abdominal exam, ct, and ca-125 tumor marker. With personal history of breast cancer before 38 and mother with ovarian, brca testing should be done. Treatments options will follow from there and may include removal of ovaries and uterus, prophylactic mastectomy and/or close surveillance.. ...Read more

Unexplained weight gain, unusual bloating in abdominal region, oncoming acne and fatigue. What are most common explanations? Not pregnant and not the pill

Maybe not related?: First distinguish fluid weight (like edema, ascites, "third spacing") from tissue weight (e.g. Bodybuilding, reparative, tumors, adipose). There are lots of metabolic reasons to rule out (organ disease like heart, liver, kidneys), insufficiency (thyroid, adrenal, kidney), more. Often high calorie (but low volume) foods ; drink may add up quickly (3000-3500 extra calories per pound gained). ...Read more

Gas and bloating nausea weight gain fatigue irregular bowel movements and late period what could this behavent got a postive pregancy test I have pcos?

While the symptoms: You describe are common during pregnancy, there are other potential causes as well. Thyroid disorders in particular can cause at least some of them. If you've had 2 or more negative pregnancy tests since your missed period, pregnancy is unlikely. However, just because you have PCOS, that doesn't mean you can't get pregnant. TSH 1.15 uIU/ml - T4 1.24 ng/dl but l've all symptoms of Hypothyroid: chronic fatigue, low temp (36°≥), severe constipation, easy weight gain, etc?

Hypothyroid sx: Is that a Free T4? A FT4 of 1.24 would be normal in most assays, as would a TSH of 1.15. If these tests are indeed normal, then your symptoms are not from hypothyroidism, which is too bad, since thyroid would be easy to treat. Best to talk to your doctor about what else this can be. ...Read more

Is it possible to have hashimotos and normal T4 T3 (liothyronine) and TSH levels? Fatigued, freezing always, hair falling out, constipation 20 lb weight gain.

Probably not: Discuss your thoughts w/ the doctor who ordered the tests and got the results. It id not likely that these would be normal if you have that condition. T4 would be likely to be low and TSH high to compensate - but get a good explanation from the Dr along w/ alternative possibilities. Drink water, eat fruit/veggie based diet, exercise properly and rest/sleep well while you search for cause. Best! ...Read more

Tsh was 1.66 a year ago. 4.98 now, with free T4 of 0.8. Symptoms of hypo (weight gain, hair loss, constipation, lethargy). Doc won't treat. Help!

It depends: Tsh has variability throughout the day so a definitive range is difficult to pin down with science. When someone is on therapy, I use the academy of clinical biochemistry range of 0.5 - 2.0 for tsh. You certainly seem symptomatic.

Given the vary low risk of mild level thyroxine adjustments, I think aslightly higher dose my be appropriate. ...Read more
