Viral vs bacterial: This could be many things. Strep throat causes fever headache and sore throat often with what is called exudate. Mono can have similar symptoms as well. Viral illnesses usually cause blisters that are whitish centrally with surrounding erythema, ie redness. Very important to make sure your child is able to drink well and swallow, if not your child should be seen asap. ...Read more

If one has had strep, and still has blisters and a scratchy throat, after 3 weeks, but no fever are they at risk for rheumatic fever?

If one has had strep, and still has blisters and a scratchy throat, after 3 weeks, but no fever are they at risk for rheumatic fever?

Unrelated symptom: You don't say where the blisters are but I agree they are not a feature of strep. The nastiest raw throats I see are usually viral and or mono. That said, the persistent throat issue is not a signal for rheumatic fever. That process occurs when your immune system kicks into high gear after untreated strep. If you did proper rx within 7-10 days of 1st symptoms, it stops the rheumatic conversion. ...Read more

Can you have strep throat and not get a fever? I have blisters on the back of throat and my body aches. It started Sunday morning, but no fever yet.

You can get strep: Without a fever, however this doesn't sound like strep, which doesn't usually have blisters. This sounds like it could be Coxsackie virus, which is treated symptomatically, not with antibiotics. Please see your doctor to be properly diagnosed and treated. ...Read more

Have had a fever over 100 for 5 days and now my throat is starting to hurt. Now I have white spots on my tonsils and blister things back of throat?

See a doctor ASAP!: Your symptoms suggest a few possibilities. It's possible you have a simple viral infection (like a cold), you should be checked for streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat) and infectious mononucleosis (mono). Strep can lead to scarlet fever or rheumatic fever (very dangerous) if not treated soon. Mono can lead to liver problems, spleen enlargement and even spleen rupture. Please get checked asap! ...Read more

My 4yr old had fever, chills, vomiting. The fever went away now her throat hurts and she had blisters. What can I give her?

Motrin or Tylenol (acetaminophen): Sounds like it may be herpangina. Most often caused by the hand, foot and mouth virus. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin can be used for pain. In severe cases with multiple sores dehydration can become a problem. Avoid acidic foods and juices for a few days as this may be irritating to the open sores at the back of the throat. The blisters are painful, but the illness is self limiting, lasting 1-2 weeks. My 4 y.O caught it in school and gave it to my wife.
