Just went for 1st ultrasound and found out I had a blighted ovum?

Empty sac: That's unfortunate, I'm sorry. 'blighted ovum' is an older, less precise name for anembryonic pregnancy. It refers to a first trimester pregnancy in which a gestational sac/intrauterine pregnancy is seen but with no embryonic pole (baby.) it's also called an 'empty sac.' to make this diagnosis you must have fairly clear knowledge of gestational age, or 'how far along' you are. ...Read more

Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Had an ultrasound today, was supposed to be 6w6d but the scan showed a sac that has a gestational age of 5weeks 2days. Could it be Blighted ovum?

Maybe: It could very well be that your dates are off as well. I would repeat the ultrasound in a 10 days or so. In addition, it would be of value to check to hcg levels 48 hours apart to see if rising or not. If dropping then that is a sign of a non viable pregnancy. ...Read more

If during the first ultrasound it appears that it is a blighted ovum, is there a possibility that there is a fetus and the ultrasound missed it?

If during the first ultrasound it appears that it is a blighted ovum, is there a possibility that there is a fetus and the ultrasound missed it?

Possibly: No embryo can be seen during early gestational development. Fetal heart motion usually occurs around 6 to 6 and half weeks of gestation with vaginal ultrasound. ...Read more

At what week is it considered a blighted ovum? My wife is 5 weeks and 5 days no feta. Pole. No yolk sac ps she had a tranvaginial us ultrasound

Varies: It depends on the size of the gestational sac. If it's very small, then there is a chance she's just earlier than 5 5/7 weeks. But if the mean (average) gestational sac diameter is measuring larger and there is no yolk sac or pole, it more likely is an anembryonic pregnancy (blighted ovum). Talk to your OB about the measurements and whether you are just very early in preg. ...Read more

Concerning: If you are truly 6 weeks 5 days, one would expect to see a heartbeat. However, sometimes pregnancies implant later than expected so it is worthwhile check in one more time just to be sure even though the odds are not good. ...Read more

Blighted+ovum+hcg+levels I am 9 weeks 4 days they did an ultrasound yesterday and all it showed was a sac no fetal pole nothing my level was 35000?

Blighted ovum: Unfortunately what you are describing is consistent with a blighted ovum. This is where an embryo implants into the uterine lining but the embryo or baby part doesn't grow where as the placenta part does. The gestational sac grows continuously without the baby. This event can continue growing for weeks. At times the patient will elect to undergo a dilation and curettage ending this abnormal pregnancy. If one elect to allow nature to take it's course then this will occur over weeks to possibly a month or so. ...Read more

We'll see: Your physician can tell you. If it is... The term "blighted ovum" is the wrong word to use in a disappointing situation like this -- i'd prefer the term "anembryonic pregnancy", because it reminds you that nothing magical happened, and that you can go on to be a mother. The placenta formed well & you were spared from baby having a terrible birth defect. I wish you comfort. ...Read more

Ask your MD: You need to ask your MD who is following your blighted ovum that question, as he/she may be considering a D & C next week and the risk of infection post surgery is higher when intercourse stirs up or contributes bacteria. ...Read more

U need advice?: This sounds like a complex problem, and it certainly has distressed you. I would try to arrange a visit on HealthTap prime as there is not enough space in these postings to get enough info to make a diagnosis. Also, there will probably be some back & forth that is necessary. Alternatively, seek a 2nd opinion from another Obstetrician / Gynecologist in ur area with the test results in hand. Not sure: So it may be one is a sac and the other is fluid. It may be twin sacs. To confirm a sac is an actual pregnancy you must be something in it like a yolk sac. It will be worth while repeating the scan in 1 week ...Read more

Fetal pole on 5 wk 5 day sonogram looks abnormal, with a small radiolucent area in the center of a otherwise radiopaque 2mm blob. Is it blighted ovum?

Not blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is when there is a gestational sac but no fetus at all. Since your sonogram shows a fetal pole it is not a blighted ovum. You will need to keep your follow up sonogram appointment which should be made for next week to see if the heartbeat is seen. An early miscarriage is still a possibility so follow up is needed. ...Read more

Hello.: Hello. I am sorry to hear about your situation. If your doctor did an serum HCG and the level was far to too low for a fetus of this age, that would be suggestive that the ovum did not live. I think it would bother me if a physician did not confirm the ultrasound finding. I recommend that you talk to your physician and explain your concerns. ...Read more

I recently had a blighted ovum. I'm now pregnant again and going in for a 7 week ultrasound. Will they be able to tell if this pregnancy is viable?

Assuming: That the transvaginal dating confirms 7 weeks, a heartbeat should be detected in a normal pregnancy. If it is 6 weeks, a heartbeat may or may not be detected, and if it is 5 weeks or less, probably won't be detected even in a normal pregnancy. This is also assuming that the gestation is otherwise normal in appearance. ...Read more

Jan17 my hCG levels:15, 968 -today 7 days later 36, 600 I am 6 weeks 1 day pregnant according to ultrasound, is this normal or can it be a blighted ovum?

Likely ok: Once the HCG levels get high they don't tend to double every 2-3 days. So now an ultrasound is a better way to check for or confirm viability. ...Read more

I had a pelvic ultrasound at 5 weeks 5 days pregnant. The fetal pole compared to others I've seen looks abnormal to me. Could it be a blighted ovum?

Not likely: An intrauterine embryonic pole at 5weeks 5 days is usually a reassuring sign particularly if cardiac activity was also detected and you have no pain, no bleeding..."Blighted ovum" is an unclear and obsolete terminology which is not very meaningful and is rarely used nowadays.
Repeating your ultrasound in 7 to 10 days may provide you more reassurance. ...Read more

I am 5 weeks pregnant and under stress from work. Do you think I will miscarry? I had a blighted ovum miscarriage last november 2011 no signs of bleeding or cramps we found out during our first ultrasound... And this is my first time being pregnant since.

It: It sounds like you may need some help managing your stress level throughout your pregnancy. Your doctor was right in regards to women having babies under extremely stressful situations, however that does not mean it was easy for them. They were under circumstances they could not control. At least you have the resources to manage this issue. I suggest you seek therapy from a licensed mental health professional. He/she can help you learn to manage your stress and help you get through this pregnancy as stress free as possible.
Try not to think of the worse and focus on positive outcomes such as a healthy, happy, pregnant mom to be.
I wish you the very best. ...Read more

6 weeks pregnant and no fetal pole seen on transvaginal ultrasound.  could it just be too early or is it a blighted ovum?

6 weeks pregnant and no fetal pole seen on transvaginal ultrasound.  could it just be too early or is it a blighted ovum?

Yes: It certainly could be either situation. As difficult as waiting is, you need to wait about a week and repeat the sonogram. There is a wide variation in timing of ovulation, so maybe the embryo is just smaller than expected. In a week, with a normal pregnancy, an embryo should definitely be easily visible. For good or bad, there is nothing you can do to change the outcome. Good luck to you. ...Read more

I am 9 weeks pregnant, my ultrasound reveals retroverted uterus, no embryonic development. My doctor said it's blighted ovum. Is it 100% accurate?

Likely correct: If the ultrasound was performed with the endovaginal probe, a viable pregnancy would easily be confirmed. The absence of embryonic development is either from blighted ovum or ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. ...Read more

I have been diagnosed with blighted ovum, @7 weeks, 2days. After d & c, how many cycles should we wait again before trying? Affects future pregnancies?

Wait 1 normal period: Sorry to hear of your loss. After a D&C your pregnancy hormone (HCG) will fall down to zero in a few weeks, with some bleeding at that time. Wait 1 more cycle after this before trying again - after your next 'normal period'. There may be a higher chance of another miscarriage in the 1st month, so use condoms. 1 miscarriage is common, if you have 2 or more see a rei specialist to get checked out. ...Read more
