Blighted Ovum Ultrasound
Empty sac: That's unfortunate, i'm sorry. 'blighted ovum' is an older, less precise name for anembryonic pregnancy. It refers to a first trimester pregnancy in which a gestational sac/intrauterine pregnancy is seen but with no embryonic pole (baby.) it's also called an 'empty sac.' to make this diagnosis you must have fairly clear knowledge of gestational age, or 'how far along' you are. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
The sonogram is a test that looks at body organs with no radiation. It uses sound waves and can give us a 2 dimensional view of organs such as the kidney, liver, heart, and lungs. It can define spaces that are either solid or full of fluid. I can also guide large needles into an organ or near the spine, and can help define the area being cut open. Its a ...Read more
Had an ultrasound today, was supposed to be 6w6d but the scan showed a sac that has a gestational age of 5weeks 2days. Could it be Blighted ovum?
At what week is it considered a blighted ovum? My wife is 5 weeks and 5 days no feta. Pole. No yolk sac
ps she had a tranvaginial us ultrasound
Varies: It depends on the size of the gestational sac. If it's very small, then there is a chance she's just earlier than 5 5/7 weeks. But if the mean (average) gestational sac diameter is measuring larger and there is no yolk sac or pole, it more likely is an anembryonic pregnancy (blighted ovum). Talk to your OB about the measurements and whether you are just very early in preg. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Blighted ovum: Unfortunately what you are describing is consistent with a blighted ovum. This is where an embryo implants into the uterine lining but the embryo or baby part doesn't grow where as the placenta part does. The gestational sac grows continuously without the baby. This event can continue growing for weeks. At times the patient will elect to undergo a dilation and curettage ending this abnormal pregnancy. If one elect to allow nature to take it's course then this will occur over weeks to possibly a month or so. ...Read more
Do I have a blighted ovum? Cramping, spotting, and back pain. 11 weeks no baby shows on ultrasound just a yolk sac.
We'll see: Your physician can tell you. If it is... The term "blighted ovum" is the wrong word to use in a disappointing situation like this -- i'd prefer the term "anembryonic pregnancy", because it reminds you that nothing magical happened, and that you can go on to be a mother. The placenta formed well & you were spared from baby having a terrible birth defect. I wish you comfort. ...Read more
I'm concerned about a blighted ovum diagnosis and my dr is basing everything on LMP rather than the range of when I had intercourse and conceived. I believe I conceived on or after 6/21. First ultrasound Showed nothing in my uterus or on ovaries, hCG was
U need advice?: This sounds like a complex problem, and it certainly has distressed you. I would try to arrange a visit on HealthTap prime as there is not enough space in these postings to get enough info to make a diagnosis. Also, there will probably be some back & forth that is necessary. Alternatively, seek a 2nd opinion from another Obstetrician / Gynecologist in ur area with the test results in hand. GL! ...Read more
Fetal pole on 5 wk 5 day sonogram looks abnormal, with a small radiolucent area in the center of a otherwise radiopaque 2mm blob. Is it blighted ovum?
Not blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is when there is a gestational sac but no fetus at all. Since your sonogram shows a fetal pole it is not a blighted ovum. You will need to keep your follow up sonogram appointment which should be made for next week to see if the heartbeat is seen. An early miscarriage is still a possibility so follow up is needed. ...Read more
