Yes: Yes you can. But I would recommend waiting a month to try, . That allows turnover of the uterus so you are not at a higher risk of miscarriage due to the uterus not being ready. ...Read more

Blighted+ovum+hcg+levels I am 9 weeks 4 days they did an ultrasound yesterday and all it showed was a sac no fetal pole nothing my level was 35000?

Blighted+ovum+hcg+levels I am 9 weeks 4 days they did an ultrasound yesterday and all it showed was a sac no fetal pole nothing my level was 35000?

Blighted ovum: Unfortunately what you are describing is consistent with a blighted ovum. This is where an embryo implants into the uterine lining but the embryo or baby part doesn't grow where as the placenta part does. The gestational sac grows continuously without the baby. This event can continue growing for weeks. At times the patient will elect to undergo a dilation and curettage ending this abnormal pregnancy. If one elect to allow nature to take it's course then this will occur over weeks to possibly a month or so. ...Read more

Diagnosed with blighted ovum. Blood hCG =271. Could I have ovulated that day? Or would it take at least 14 days for another ovulation?

Diagnosed with blighted ovum. Blood hCG =271. Could I have ovulated that day? Or would it take at least 14 days for another ovulation?

HCG levels: HCG is produced from a pregnancy, and "271" is very low. Ovulation does not cause HCG production. If you had a "blighted ovum" and the HCG is still measurable, there is still viable tissue inside your womb. You may need a minor surgery procedure to clear this from your womb (uterus). Once the HCg is zero, ovulation may occur about 2-3 weeks later or more. ...Read more

My hCG level went from 386 wk 4 to 5356 in wk 5. What are the chances of a blighted ovum? Will ur hCG levels rise tht much in 1 wk if u hv an empty?

What did uer OB say?: What is your Progesterone level, a high one is good a low one is not good, should be able to see a sac at 5 weeks and should be able to see a ht beat sometimes at 6 weeks depending on the person and theus machine but definitely by 6 1/2 - 7 weeks. ...Read more

US at 5w5d gest sac meaures 5w1d but yolk sac is seen. My OB is dx with blighted ovum due to HCG being over 7000, stating a fetal pole should have been seen. Is this accurate?

Rely on ultrasound: It is true that an HCG of 7000 means that you should see a fetal pole. But the HCG is a less important tool now. It is very important early on to differentiate an ectopic. Your ultrasound shows that the pregnancy is in the uterus and not an ectopic. It's ok to wait and repeat the ultrasound. There is no harm in waiting one week and looking again. ...Read more

Has anyone had a high hCG and then found out they had a blighted ovum?

Possible: Blighted ovum is still a pregnancy and HCG is produced resulting in positive pregnancy test. The actual level of HCG is not helpful in making a diagnosis of blighted ovum. ...Read more

Do you think that an hCG level on apr 14 of 958 and then one on apr 23 of 14885 indicates a blighted ovum. The ges sac is present at 5weeks 5days.

US is more accurate: There is a wide range of "normal" beta-hcg levels. It is difficult to draw meaningful conclusions based on the 2 numbers you provided. If dates are correct, a transvaginal ultrasound should show a yolk sac and fetal pole by 5 weeks 5 days. It could be the dates are off a bit in which case it may just be too early. A follow-up ultrasound can determine if this is a viable pregnancy. ...Read more

Too early: Your levels are rising normally so at this time everything looks ok. A blighted ovum can not be diagnosed at this time as it is too early. Everything is rising at normal levels so there is no reason to suspect it at this time ...Read more

Will my hCG levels continue to double with a blighted ovum? Mine are more than doubling ges sac measuring 5w5d however I'm 5w2d. Hcg 4967 no yolk sac

Generally not: If your HCG is doubling and the sac is approx. Consistent with your dates, chances are that you do not have a blighted ovum - could be a normal pregnancy. Keep checking sonos and hcg's - may need intervention if signs of fetal activity / growth are not evident. Good luck. ...Read more

Had 2 healthy pregnancies. Now had a blighted ovum in Feb and am currently pregnant but have low HCG and been put on progesterone. What's going on?

Unclear: Not sure what you mean by having a 'low' HCG. Typically you are doubling appropriately or you are not. The progesterone is usually supplemented if it has been shown to be low for the gestational age. You have two term, uncomplicated pregnancies. The blighted ovum is a fluke occurrence that cannot be corrected for. Not sure what is going on. Talk to your doctor ...Read more

Did us ges sac and yolk sac but no baby, last period feb 7 2014. Hcg level 15000 is this a blighted ovum?

Maybe: But your ultrasound was done too early to say, just as likely everything is fine. If feb 7 was your certain lmp, then you'd be exactly 6 w 1d today (3/21/14,) ultrasound next week would give you a much more certain answer. ...Read more

Having D&C tomorrow but dr puzzled. Hcg @ 9 weeks is 130, 000 but heterogeneous material seen on US, no nausea for molar, can it be blighted ovum?

Recheck labs...: If a repeat hcg level after a couple of days is markedly decreased, it could be a blighted ovum. However, if the hcg level does not reduce or drops more slowly, especially in light of heterogenous material, I would more likely suspect a molar pregnancy.
Please continue to follow up with your doctor to complete treatment. ...Read more

Empty gest. Sac: A blighted ovum happens when a fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining, but the embryo does not develop.
A diagnosis is usually not made when an ultrasound shows either an empty womb or an empty gestational sac. Your doctor should be able to answer this question for you. There is usually a high level of chromosome abnormalities which causes a woman’s body to naturally miscarry. ...Read more

Gestation sac 12mm x 5mm x 12mm is this likely a blighted ovum no yolk sac present docters estimate 7 weeks by lmp my dates 5 weeks 4 days hcg increas?

Must know HCG level: The correlation between the sonographic findings of a 12 mm mean gestational sac is much better with your blood betaHCG levels than with your estimated gestational age of 7 wks by LMP. If your betaHCG is rising appropriately and you are feeling fine, another well timed sonogram may provide you and your doctor some reassurance or a better sense of direction. ...Read more

How high do hCG levels rise with a blighted ovum? Do they rise like in a normal pregnancy?

Miscarriage: The HCG levels can rise quite high with a blighted ovum, but these levels do not rise normally. The level of HCG does not tell if you have a blighted ovum or what is called a missed abortion by some. If your HCG level is doubling every 48 hours in the first weeks of pregnancy, your pregnancy is most likely normal - if not, probably a miscarriage. ...Read more

Blighted ovum or potential ectopic? My HCG levels doubled, then dropped twice before rising again. OBGYN is recommending methotrexate.

Good idea: After multiple lab examinations, if there is still nothing seen in the uterus and a rising HCG, you most certainly have an abnormal pregnancy that should be actively managed. A dilation and curettage would help to figure out if the abnormal pregnancy was in the uterus. If it was confirmed that it was not in the uterus, then methotrexate would be a good idea along with continued lab follow up. ...Read more

I'm 6 wks pregnant, has US and saw only gestational sac, empty inside. Hcg 11, 000, progesterone 14. Redraw tomorrow. Could this be a blighted ovum?

Yes: Unfortunately, if all is as you say, you are correct. With a bHCG of 11, 000 and no fetal pole, it is suspicious for a blighted ovum. However, it is necessary to repeat the bHCG in 48 hours. Don't be surprised if it doubles and your f/u ultrasound shows a viable IUP. I have seen this happen! Sonographic results are usually as good as the person scanning. Your best bet is the blood test. Good Luck! ...Read more

Repeat Sono.: The HCG levels you provide are meaningless without a times scale. You are about 8 days less along than would be expected from the lmp. Could be late ovulation vs blighted ovum. A repeat sono in a week will answer the question. If viable there should be an embryo and a heartbeat. Good luck. ...Read more

Can hCG levels go down to 0 before you bleed the sac out in a blighted ovum pregnancy? Could I ovulate while bleeding or a day or 2 after bleeding stop

Blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is a fertilized egg which is not growing, and at some point will abort spontaneously. HCG levels will go to zero sometimes prior to expulsion of the blighted ovum. Ovulation may occur any time, since the blighted ovum will not prevent it, but chances are pregnancy will not result until the blighted ovum is passed. ...Read more

Y is my cervix closed if I am miscarrying from blighted ovum&why does my doctor want to test my hcg levels? Also I've barely bled & it's been a week

Blighted ovum: In a normal spontaneous miscarriage the hcg level should continue to fall as the cells which produce hcg die off. In rare cases something called a molar pregnancy develops. In a mole hcg levels would continue to rise and in very rare instances can develop into a malignancy called choriocarcinoma. Your doctor may need to perform a D&C to remove the remnants of this pregnancy. Talk with your Dr ...Read more
