It's common: Oral birth control pills contain a type of progesterone and a type of estrogen. The progesterone dose is fairly standard, but the estrogen dose varies between pills. Lower doses have lower potential for side effects but higher rates of breakthrough bleeding. Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) has a relatively low estrogen dose. If bleeding does not resolve (it may just resolve), then ask you doc about a different pill. ...Read more

Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time) is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time. If you are not satisfied or it continues to happen then consider using a different birth control method. It is a common side effect and does not mean something is wrong or that the pill is not working. ...Read more

I have been taking birth control pills for 2 weeks (sprintec 1st week, Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) 2nd week) and have had continuous bleeding since yesterday. Is that normal?

I have been taking birth control pills for 2 weeks (sprintec 1st week, Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) 2nd week) and have had continuous bleeding since yesterday. Is that normal?

Yes: Having irregular bleeding in the first 1-2 cycles of birth control pills is common. That's because the hormones in the pill are coming into balance with the women's hormones. If a woman has this breakthrough bleeding after the 3rd cycle she may need a different pill. Since you changed pills between the first 2 weeks there's more chance of bleeding. Take pill same time each day helps prevent this. ...Read more

Your period: On the 24th day of Yaz, (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) your period should be about to start and, while birth control pills usually decrease cramping, they do not eliminate it completely. Discuss this with your doctor. There is always the possibility of endometriosis in patients with severe problems with cramping. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Hello! I expect my period in 9 days. If I start the pill (Yaz) immediately, will I postpone the bleeding? Many thanks!

Yes!: Each Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) pack contains 24 light pink active pills 4 inert white pills. You may be able to delay your period by starting a new pack instead of taking the white inert pills. You are still protected from pregnancy if you do this. Some women have some breakthrough spotting when they do this but its a pretty good way to delay a period for some important event. Best wishes! ...Read more

It can take several months to see if that is going to work. You may need further evaluation like an ultrasound, blood work or other studies. Is it normal when you have bleeding when you are on Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) birthcontrol?

Is it normal when you have bleeding when you are on Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) birthcontrol?

No: When taking a birth control pill, one should only have bleeding episodes during the placebo pills of the pill pack. If you are bleeding during the active pills of the pack, that is not supposed to be happening. It can occur during the first 2-3 months of taking the pills (as your body 'adjusts' to the hormones) but it shouldn't be a persistent occurrence. ...Read more
