What drug is given to patients with brain stem bleeding or brain aneurysm?

What drug is given to patients with brain stem bleeding or brain aneurysm?

Unfortunately, few: There is truly no very successful medication to treat subarachnoid hemorrhage or brain stem intracerebral hemorrhage. Surgery where possible is often life saving. We have tried steroids, calcium channel blockers, and osmotic diuretics, all of which have disappointing outcomes in most cases. ...Read more

How long could you live with brain bleeding or a brain aneurysm untreated?

How long could you live with brain bleeding or a brain aneurysm untreated?

Depends: Not sure what you mean by "brain bleeding". As for untreated aneurysm, if the aneurysm is small, regular, is in anterior circulation, if you don't smoke, and you have no family history of subarachnoid hemorrhage (aneurysm bleeding) - then chances are you can live long. But the aneurysm must be monitored: if it changes it probably needs treatment. Where is your aneurysm and how big is it? ...Read more

Can giving birth (pushing) cause a brain aneurysm or bleed on brain?

Can giving birth (pushing) cause a brain aneurysm or bleed on brain?

No: There has been no association between pushing and formation of brain aneurysms. There have been concerns of increased risks of pushing in patients with certain specific neurological conditions (shunts, strokes, etc). Patients with neurological conditions should ask their OB and neurologist about the safest mode of delivery. ...Read more

Is a brain aneurysm or bleed on the brain rare at 19? I get headaches, sharp shooting pains and dull tension pains. I sometimes get stiff neck.

Is a brain aneurysm or bleed on the brain rare at 19? I get headaches, sharp shooting pains and dull tension pains. I sometimes get stiff neck.

Yes: A brain aneurysm or bleed on the brain is rare at ANY age. I can't figure why you'd jump straight to aneurysm or bleed on the brain when there are st least half a dozen wholly benign and common causes of your symptoms. I think you can safely look for somerhing else to worry about. ...Read more

How soon after brain aneurysm "leak" will it re-bleed? Possible to re-bleed mos/yrs later? I.E. Had bad ha 2wks straight, then they stopped. Leak?

Possibly: Aneurysms can have a "sentinel" rupture where they leak some blood prior to sah. It is best to be evaluated immediately in the er if this is the case as the aneurysm could rupture anytime after this point. ...Read more

Living in fear of having or developing a brain aneurysm or a bleed on my brain. Is this rare? I get headaches, sharp stabbing pains & dull pressure.

Living in fear of having or developing a brain aneurysm or a bleed on my brain. Is this rare? I get headaches, sharp stabbing pains & dull pressure.

Yes, rare: There are many much more common causes for head ache or head pains than aneurysms. Try to figure out why you have developed this fear. Did you know someone who had this. The fear is probably making the headaches worse. Tension is a major cause of headache. Consider a trip to your doctor and then to a therapist if your physical exam is normal. ...Read more

I am worried about taking 75mg aspirin 6 months after coiling of unruptured brain aneurysm. I had tias after surgery) incase of stomach or brain bleed?

Should be okay: I agree with the other docs who have answered this question. Doesn't say where you're from, but if you're in Europe I understand your concern: European docs are much more nervous about aspirin than US docs & try to use lower doses. However, the European Stroke Study showed that a dose in the 75-mg range provides a typical degree of prevention without appreciably increasing bleeding complications. ...Read more

How do you know if a brain aneurysm requires immediate surgery if it is not bleeding?

How do you know if a brain aneurysm requires immediate surgery if it is not bleeding?

Size: Aneurysms larger than 7mm should be treated sooner rather than later. Unless an aneurysm has bled, there is no reason to treat emergently. The only other consideration is if the aneurysm is growing quickly, it should be treated sooner rather later! ...Read more

After coiling of an uruptured 8mm brain aneurysm, what chance is there of it bleeding in the future?Every twinge or pain in my head concerns me now.

It depends: If the aneurysm was completely occluded, the chances of an unruptured aneurysm bleeding are virtually zero. Even with a small amount of residual aneurysm flow, the risk of bleeding of an unruptured aneurysm is still very low. ...Read more
