The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Mold and bleach: It's possible that it is from both... When cleaning, mold spores and some dust flew up into the air and the bleach may have splashed a bit. I cleaned with bleach at work. A lot of it. And now I feel like it's hard to breath and my chest really hurts. I already have a cold with a cough and after cleaning with so much bleach my chest is super sore and its almost hard to take a deep breath..
Tight airway: Would be ideal to see your doctor today for an evaluation. Will be difficult for the doc to determine cause of chest soreness after the sensation has passed (at a future visit). A peak flow measurement and full physical exam will help determine with you're having bronchoconstriction (similar to or because of asthma) secondary to infection and/or irritant exposure. Inhaler medication may help. ...Read more
I inhaled bleach and ammonia and I keep throwing up and feeling sick I was cleaning apartment and inhaled bleach and ammonia. Now I feel sick and won;t stop throwing up. What can I do and got a cough that hurt that won't stop
Mixing bleach and ammonia can create choramine vapor which is toxic. If you cleaned your own apartment and are still in it, you and who ever else lives in the apartment should exit it immediately and get to fresh air. Do not re-enter the area where the gases were mixed. If you cleaned someone else's apartment, you need to contact the police so that they can ensure they have not been impacted by toxic fumes. It is likely that you inhaled poisonous vapors.
Recommend that you call 911 for emergency assistance. Follow their advice. You need to be medically evaluated emergently.
Call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 after you have been medically cleared. They can provide you on instructions on how to work with the area contaminated by toxic gas. ...Read more

See a doctor: You have chemical irritation of the lining or the bronchial tubes. Depends: It depends on how long you were exposed, the level of exposure, and any contributing or systemic issues you may/may not have already. Chlorine burn: Appears that you have sustained a chlorine irritation / burn to your naso-pharynx-tracheal-bronchial tissues. If external, the immediate remedyvis long ice cold water rinsing. You cannot do much of that, but prolonged mouthwashing, gargling, and nasal washing can help. Then, you need an inhaler. Saline breathing treatments may help but best is a metered dose steroid inhaler. So see a prescriber ...Read more

I beleive I have damaged my lungs by breathing in some cleaning chemicals. What can I do about this horrible coughing fit? I was clleaning my toilet and mixed some bleach with toilet bowl cleaner in the bowl and went to wipe it out and inhaled the fume
I really wish I had seen your question earlier, so that I could have responded to it immediately. It sounds like you did damage your lungs. I do not know if the damage is temporary. Mixing bleach with some toilet bowl cleaners can produce chlorine gas. To get an idea of how dangerous chlorine is, it has been used as a chemical warfare agent. Bleach mixed with ammonia is especially dangerous because it can create monochloramine or dichloramine (chloramine gases). You won’t see the gases in the air and you might not smell them because of the aroma of the chemicals you are using.
It is usually unwise to mix cleaning chemicals because there could be chemical reactions that releases toxic gases. Anytime you are cleaning a toilet with a chemical product that can be toxic (yes that includes most cleaning products), the windows should be open and the fans should be on. If you come into contact with gases that cause you to cough or experience burning, get fresh air as quickly as possible. Depending on how severely you are impacted, do not hesitate to call 911. I do recommend that you be seen at your emergency room, especially if you have lingering symptoms. ...Read more
