Nails or toes?: If you mean the toes themselves, this is a little worrisome. Usually the skin will turn black if there is tissue death--necrosis--of the skin. This can happen if blood vessels are damaged or inflamed. Sometimes, blood under the skin can cause this appearance as well. I heard of:
Blue toe syndrome before....Black to me connotates gangrene and that would be something you want evaluated ratehr quickly. In the event it is blue - this is still somethign to have evaluated, but black is usually worse than blue.

Was there an injury?: That is one way to develop black and blue. It also can be from a tight shoe or a circulatory dosorder. Is it painful.? Is the skin excessively cold or even hot. Feel the temperature: Simply feel your toe and compare it's temperature to the same toe on the other foot. If it is cold and not even close the other toe's temperature, you need to get to the emergency room now. If the toe is in severe pain, get to the emergency room. Go to hospital now: I'm not convinced that gout has anything to do w/toes turning black. But if you have any pain at all in your toes, go to hospital now for an evaluation. Trapped blood.: Black colored skin around the toes can be seen when there has been capillary bleeding. The trapped blood will turn almost black as seen through the skin layers.
