My daughter recently had a mastoidectomy should I be concerned that such a bad infection was caused by being around black mold and not knowing it.

Doubtful: If there had been a mastoid infection caused by 'black mold' your doctor would have indicated that from the cultures or the pathology from the surgery. ...Read more

We have black mold in our bathroom behind walls, and has spread to windows. My 2 yr old has had ear infections and tubes in ears twice plus a constant?

Probably unrelated: First, you need to get a reputable company to fix the water leaks that cause mold to grow. Unless the problem has been going on for years, your toddler's problems are probably unrelated. Recurrent ear infections are not rare until the age of 2; a major risk factor is allergy. If ear problems continue, have your child see a pediatric ENT and board-certified allergist immunologist. ...Read more

What treatments are there to help health related issues from long term black mold exposure?

What treatments are there to help health related issues from long term black mold exposure?

Evidence lacking: Unfortunately, there is not a body of scientific evidence to support the concept that exposure to black mold causes specific symptoms or diseases. When I have a patient who believes they have this problem, I check them for mold allergies and encourage them to get their exposure problem resolved. I also check them for chronic infections and if they have those, I check immune function. ...Read more

What is the appropriate treatment for Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome caused by exposure to black mold?

Wise up: Forgive my frankness. After over twenty years of big-money lawyering, the large majority of scientific pathologists and clinicians do not believe there is any such thing. Buying into a fad or "holistic" or ""victim" diagnosis will prevent you from finding the real explanation for how you feel -- perhaps even an unusually difficult life situation -- and guarantees you will never feel well again. ...Read more

Should I seek a toxicologist if I have been exposed to black mold, and I'm experiencing severe health problems mainly fatigue and dizziness?

Primary doctor first: For fatigue and dizziness, one should see his primary doctor for a thorough evaluation. Such symptoms are very common and can be due to almost any medical problem. If the primary doctor suspects that the fatigue and dizziness are related to mold exposure, he may refer to an allergist, immunologist, otolaryngologist, or pulmonologist; to look for allergies, nose or sinus problems, or lung problems. ...Read more

I finally got a blood test for black mold and tested positive! It's been 8 months since I left the house. Not really sure what to do now :- (?

What kind of test?: You will need to be specific about what kind of test was done and also if you are suffering from any illness from the exposure. Not all people become ill from mold exposure but those who do may suffer from allergic symptoms and rarely even permanent scarring in the lungs. If you are feeling well otherwise, I'd not worry over it regardless of the test result. ...Read more

I have had a cough and my lungs hurt! I was staying in a friends apartment that had black mold all over. Day/night quill is not helping wht to do?

Dayquil/Nyquil R not: For allergies. U apparently r allergic to mold & smoking makes u more susceptible to lung irritation by mold. (smoking inhibits lung's ability to flush mold or other foreign material from body). Antihistamines (zyrtec/claritin/ benadryl) may help. If problem worsens, see doc. Mold spores may have entered lungs & taken up residence. ...Read more

No, don't worry: The most common black mold symptoms and health effects are associated with a respiratory response. Chronic coughing and sneezing, irritation to the eyes, mucus membranes of the nose and throat, rashes, chronic fatigue and persistent headaches can all be symptomatic of black mold exposure or black mold poisoning. If the area is very small, wear a mask and clean with a chlorine spray. ...Read more

I just finished a bottle of water (cambel back with straw type) and noticed black (mold?) in the straw. Do I need to go to the hospital or can I take pepto?

See pharmacist: Activated charcoal capsules work as an adsorbent, not an absorbent. Speak with the pharmacist about it's use and dosage. It will bind with anything that you just swallowed, and prevent its absorption. It's also non-toxic. However pepto-bismol only coats the stomach surface, but will not bind to the black mold, nor prevent absorption as well. The activated charcoal will, and you'll poop it out black. Can still take it to hours later, and it will be effective. ...Read more

Depends on Exposure: Transient exposure to a small amount of mold is likely not significant. Symptoms usually only occur with very high levels of exposure like in an occupational setting.
