On the flip side, you have to make sure the discoloration is benign and that it is not something malignant. Probably: It does sound like an ingrown toenail, which usually does involve infection. The corner of the nail grows into the skin edge and burrows in causing infection. If it is mild, you can sometimes keep the nail edge elevated out of the skin and it can grow past the area. If that does not work, probably would be good to be seen. ...Read more
