No back up needed: If you have not missed any pills but were just 4 hours late you should not have any problems. If you had missed an entire day, especially near the time of your cycle when you would ovulate, there is the potential that you would not suppress ovulation. It is a lower dose pill so a little more likely than with higher dose. They do not protect against infection so condoms should be used also.. ...Read more

Yes: If you take a pill each day, regardless of the time, you will have effective contraception and there is no need for backup protection. The time of day that you take the pill does have some importance in regard to cycle control.
