Which pill is better? Belara or Yasmin? Or are all birth control pills 99.9% effective?

Choice of pills: Is done usually by the side effects rather than efficacy at preventing pregnancy. Birth control pills are theoretically effective up to 99.7% but in real world situations (due to forgetting to take, incorrect starts, etc) can be as low as 90%, and that shouldn't differ much amongst different pill formulations unless one is very large where higher-dose pills may be needed to control the cycles ...Read more

Switched from desogen (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel) to generic apri. Are there any differences?

Switched from desogen (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel) to generic apri. Are there any differences?

Yes: Generic versions of medications are usually fine, but they are not identical. The fda allows for a modest degree of difference in "bioequivalence". Essentially, a generic medication is allowed to be sold if it is between 80% - 125% of the brand name medication. Most generic medications are fine for most people, but there is always some percentage of patients for whom they are different. ...Read more

Birth control side effects; does anybody take estrostep (ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone) fe?

An older pill: I do not ahve any of my patients on that pill anymore. Side efefcts from any pill, could be break through bleeding, irregular bleeding, weight gain, bloating, breast tenderness, . Less common ones are blood clot heart attacck, stroke. No periods can also happen. Headaches. For most young people the benefits far out weigh the risks. My favorite pill is a low dose on loloestrin and loestrin. ...Read more

How ovral (ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel) pills works?

How ovral (ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel) pills works?

Prevent egg release: Ovral (ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel) and all birth control pills contain hormones that prevent ovulation (release of egg by your ovary). They also cause the mucous in your cervix (the opening to uterus or womb) thicker which make it hard for sperm to enter. It thins the lining of the uterus which makes it an unpleasant environment for a fertilized egg. ...Read more

Are birth control pills taken for acne like Estelle 35-ED/Diane 35-ED just as effective for birth control as other combination pills ?

Yes: It's perfectly effective as a birth control due to the estrogen. The main difference is that the other hormone is typically a Progesterone in other combination pills. The second hormone in Estelle-35ED is an anti-androgen hormone called cyproterone acetate which decreases the level of androgens you are exposed to/able to respond to and thereby decreasing oily skin and acne. ...Read more

Desogen (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel) birth control--is it good?

Desogen (ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel) birth control--is it good?

Not my 1st choice: I do not like that pill, and it has 30mcg of estrogen and it is 21 days. There are many pills that have less estrogen which is better- less chance for estrogen related side effects. My number one pill i prescribe is loloestin, it only has 10 mcg estrogen which is safer and it has 24 active pills and then 2 estrogen pills so only 2 placebo pills , so you get lighter periods and less chance of a cys. ...Read more
