Does a diagnostic ultrasound look for all birth defects? Over 40 and having my first kiddo. Will a diagnostic ultrasound at 22 weeks show all major forms of birth defect, or are there some that can only be detected by amnio or some other test?

Does a diagnostic ultrasound look for all birth defects? Over 40 and having my first kiddo. Will a diagnostic ultrasound at 22 weeks show all major forms of birth defect, or are there some that can only be detected by amnio or some other test?

Many undetectable: Or missed. The accuracy is operator-specific, but even the most talented prenatal ultrasonologists, both Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Radiology specialists, will miss the diagnosis of Down in an affected pregnancy. You are entitled to have testing for Down by a maternal blood test for fetal DNA, 99.9% accurate, with results in 4 to 7 days. Your age-specific risk is 1/100. Get genetic counseling. ...Read more

What's the integrated test? Does it look for all birth defects?

What's the integrated test? Does it look for all birth defects?

I'm not sure!: I am just not sure what the "integrated test" is. And this is not a criticism of you at all. The words in medicine and especially in genetics are crazy hard to understand properly. And sometimes their meanings change! I would be very pleased if you could find out a bit more about this test, including the lab that performs it, and ask once more. Btw, no test or procedure finds all birth defects. ...Read more

I had laser treatment of hair removal and eye operation 7 years back. I have hair on my chin. Will both cause birth defect in baby if I conceive now?

I had laser treatment of hair removal and eye operation 7 years back. I have hair on my chin. Will both cause birth defect in baby if I conceive now?

Not related: Your laser hair removal ; eye operation should have nothing to do (neither positive nor negative) about your ability to conceive. Now if you have abundant hair in wrong places (hirutism) which can be caused by systemic diseases(eg pcod, cushings, androgen secreting tumor, etc), you may have problems conceiving. If you had cataract removed, could have been caused by too much circulating cortisol. ...Read more

If your are infected with chlamydia, can that cause birth defects in the child? Even if I get treatment to cure it. Could it cause down syndrome?

Only if untreated.: Chlamydia infection is of no risk to the fetus if treated properly (that includes your sexual partner). It has nothing to do with down syndrome. That's why Erythromycin ointment is applied to all newborns' eyes prophylactical. ...Read more

How some drugs cause birth defect in pregnant womans?. Can it alter a baby's normal growth by producing some chemicals or change DNA & cause mutation?

All of the above: All the things you mentioned can happen. In addition, some drugs can block certain steps in the formation of proteins needed to build the body, and then abnormal proteins form and defects occur. I took two Accutane pills on february 22 and 23. Each pill is 5 mg. I conceived on may 30. Should I be worried that my baby will have birth defect?

Category X: Isotretinoin (accutane) is a significant human teratogen. It's marketed for cystic acne & despite methods to try to avoid pregnancies, it still happens. However, it's not stored in tissue, the drugs clears after 5 days of ingestion, & luckily for you, it's too early to cause birth defects. Topical tretinoin has not been associated with teratogenic effects. Check with your doc to confirm the above. ...Read more

Is clinodactyly a genetic disorder, birth defect?

Yes, but .....: Clinodactyly is a curve of one or more fingers, which is pretty common, especially for the pinkies, and no big deal at all. Technically it's a minor birth defect and usually not a sign of any problem. But sometimes it's one component of a rare genetic syndrome, like wahab syndrome (http://omim.
