At the extremes: Severe depression and severe mania, the extreme ends of the bipolar spectrum, can indeed cause psychosis, which can include hallucinations. This is a very dangerous state to be in, and if it is you or a close loved one, you need immediate evaluation and to get started on therapy before the disorder causes you to do something that can affect your life forever.
It is a symptom: Bipolar disorder has as one of the primary symptoms, grandiosity. An elevated sense of self-importance, but to the extreme levels. Some may believe they are god's or very important people like politicians and executives. As treatment takes effect, these symptoms usually diminish.
No unless stopped: Anti seizure medication actually protects against seizures and does not cause seizures. However, if you suddenly stop the medication without taper and have been on it awhile you're at risk of having a seizure. This can happen even if you haven't had a seizure before. That is why it is a good idea to taper the medicine down before stopping it.
I want to know if zopliclone causes weight gain and if is better than valium. I can't sleep and I have a bipolar disorder.
Depression, Anxiety: I admire you for your concern for Health. Irregular periods, weight gain and insomnia are likely due to stress causing Anxiety and Depression. You have been taking Hiderax (Atarax) which helps with Anxiety and causes sedation. Valium is for anxiety and is habit forming. In some people Zopliclone can cause weight gain. I have bipolar disorder and I want to know which drug is better and cause less weight gain: ziprasidone, aripiprazole or quetiapine.
No: Drug abuse is bad. Abuse is by definition bad. But drug abuse cannot be blamed for everything. The symptoms that can lead to a person being diagnosed bipolar should be able to be distinguished from da. It may be difficult and they may co-exist, but they don't "cause" each other. Treatment is a good idea for either and certainly for both. Good luck!
We Don't Know: We really do not know what causes bipolar disorder and we do not know what happens to the brain in folks with bipolar disorder. It would be great if we did, but we don't. There is ongoing research trying to unlock the secrets to many brain diseases. I think, in the next decade or so, there will be many great discoveries in this area. Stay tuned.See 2 more doctor answers
Is there a medication comparable to Abilify (aripiprazole) to treat bipolar disorder that doesn't cause weight gain?
Potentially Yes: Ability does not cause weight gain with the same frequency as some other meds. There are similar meds that may be less likely to contribute to weight gain, such as saphris (asenapine) or geodon. There are is also another class of meds, the anticonvulsants, which are used fir bipolar disorder and which may not cause a problem with weight. Not everyone will experience the same side effects with the same med.See 4 more doctor answers
Could seroquel (quetiapine) cause bipolar disorder in previously healthy patients? I feel very strange on it. One minute im happy the other, miserable.:- (
Inadequate treatment: Seroquel (quetiapine) is not a cause of bipolar disorder. Suboptimal dosing may reduce the likelyhood of therapeutic response. Regardless, treatment needs to be individualized. Seroquel (quetiapine) may not be well tolerated by some or provide relief for others. Other treatment options exist.See 1 more doctor answer
Bacterial meningitis, can it cause long term problems such as bipolar disorder or anxiety? Way of thinking? Impulse control?
Bacterial Meningitis: It is possible for residual neurological effects to occur by post- infectious syndromes or local inflammatory reactions. There is no specific post infectious psychiatric symptom. Years after the infection, an additional stressor may bring to the surface a sub clinical condition that was a residual vulnerability from the meningitis.
Multifactorial: As with many medical conditions the causes of bipolar disorder are not fully know. It is believed they are polygenetic, with multiple genes interacting resulting in some degree of vulnerability or resistance to the condition. This biology then interacts with environmental factors, both positive and negative which can have different effects based upon when in life or how many/often they occur.See 2 more doctor answers
No need for sleep: Typically, no need for sleep or very little sleep over several days or up to a week and not feeling tired. Also, feeling like you have superpowers, you can fly, or save the world by yourself, grandiose delusions. Finally, increased risk taking behaviors, like excessive gambling, sexual promiscuity, shopping sprees, etc. Depressive episodes are similat to unipolar depression.
What are the causes of hallucinations? I have both a/v hallucinations and bipolar disorder. The hallucinations are very disconcerting!
Hallucinations: Hallucinations are psychotic symptoms, and can happen in many different contexts. In bipolar disorder, they can happen when you're either depressed or manic. I see no mood stabilizing or antipsychotic medications in your list, but I do see the antidepressants amitriptylene and bupropion. If this is true, it may be the reason for your hallucinations. Please tell your psychiatrist asap!See 1 more doctor answer
Bipolar Disorder: May have been exacerbated by or trigger by domestic violence/ abuse. That does not mean it was the cause. What to do? Are you receiving help for your bipolar disorder? If not, getting mental health assistance is very important. If you are living in a home with domestic violence -if you elect to remain, then it would be very important to have a safety plan. This would allow you to leave before it.
Though depression is not required for diagnosis most people have both manic and depressive episodes and may have mixed episodes with features of both. Length of episodes vary, but are separated by "normal" periods of emotion and behavior. See my answers to similar ...Read more
