Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. In men, this is called male pattern hair loss; in women, it is called ...Read more

Never take meds unless necessary, but doc suggested vit. D and biotin forte (hair loss due to recent illness, but recovered) can these 2 help my body?

Yes and No: Taking vitamin D supplements is helpful to most people, because most people do not get enough vitamin D (either from their food and drink, or from sunlight). Taking biotin doesn't help a normal person who already has eats a balanced diet. There is enough biotin for essentially everyone who eats a healthy diet. Very rarely is anyone deficient in biotin. ...Read more

Thrombocyopenia: 43 F from US. Notes being seen by heme for low platelets. Also have hair loss. Derm suggests biotin forte. The only way to test if if will lower your platelets will if to take it. I would ask you heme as they know you better. Beware of OTC meds of any kind as they can contain things that may lower platelets. Tell Heme about anything you take that is not prescribed by them. ...Read more

Get evaluated: If you're a man with early onset of male pattern baldness, either embrace it or ask your physician about medications and surgery. Otherwise, get evaluated so you'll know whether it's telogen effluvium, seborrhea, alopecia areata, hypothyroidism. or one of the others. Biotin's not the key, and treatment may be easy or impossible depending on the cause. ...Read more

Genetic cause?: The medical problems that need to be excluded are an under active thyroid gland or autoimmune disease. Blood tests will help diagnose. Pregnancy, weight loss, stress/trauma, too much vitamin A are other causes. Because of your age, I suspect androgenetic alopecia, a genetic tendency to lose hair as the follicles themselves shrink. Continue working with a good dermatologist with an interest in hair ...Read more

Telogen effluvium?: Is that what they called it? If that's what it is, basically it's not treatable and generally it remits after a while. Eat sensibly, trusting you've had your thyroid checked, an economical multivitamin with minerals appropriate to your being a young woman and with regard to your diet. In the meantime, a baseball cap looks great. ...Read more

I have been using minox & fin along with biotin (5mg) for my hair loss. Can long term biotin use cause hepatitis? (i came across sources claiming that)

Unlikely: Vitamin b7 is well-tolerated when taken as prescribed. There are no reported cases of adverse drug reactions or toxicity. Biotin is water-soluble and can be flushed out in the urine. Though a vitamin b7 overdose is rare and is quite unlikely to cause serious complications, side effects could be seen in people who have been overdosing on biotin for a long time, but do not include hepatitis. ...Read more

Had major surgery & want to minimize hair loss if it happens. Dr. said take 10 mcg biotin. Is this right dose & does biotin really help with hair loss?

Doubt it: Biotin deficiency is rare, but can occur in persons with genetic mutations, on long-term antibiotics or anti-convulsants, or who eat a lot of raw egg whites. There is no good evidence that this easily available, over-the-counter supplement is the magic potion to grow hair or prevent hair loss. Biotin is safe to take at normal recommended doses (the Mayo Clinic website recommends 30-100 mcg a day). ...Read more

See a Dermatologist: Biotin deficiency is rare, but can occur in persons with genetic mutations, on long-term antibiotics or anti-convulsants, or who eat a lot of raw egg whites. There is no good evidence that this easily available, over-the-counter supplement is the magic potion to grow hair or prevent hair loss. Worthless: I am sorry you have not had your hair loss evaluated, but were given a "pop" remedy that seldom helps. Get a proper evaluation. If it is hypothyroidism, your life depends on proper treatment. If it is telegen effluvium, perhaps a cause can be found. If it is alopecia areata, Rx will likely fail and you can adapt. ...Read more

I am 24 year old guy suffering from hair loss. I've been on biotin and rogaine medication for about 2 years, haven't seen noticeable difference. Help!

Often fails: Biotin isn't going to help. If you have alopecia areata, nothing will help. This is probably too long for telogen effluvium. Especially if you're naturally blessed with a lot of great body hair and a thick beard, rogaine may not slow male pattern baldness. Shave your head, grow some great facial hair, hit the gym, and embrace your full masculinity. Nothing looks better than a buffed, balding man. ...Read more
