Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. There is no good evidence that this easily available, over-the-counter supplement is the magic potion to grow hair or prevent hair loss. Yes and No: Taking vitamin D supplements is helpful to most people, because most people do not get enough vitamin D (either from their food and drink, or from sunlight). Taking biotin doesn't help a normal person who already has eats a balanced diet. There is enough biotin for essentially everyone who eats a healthy diet. Not the biotin: biotin is used to help with hair loss and nail growth as well as some skin conditions. It should not cause back acne or rashes unless you are allergic to it. You can try decreasing the dose or holding it for a few weeks to see if your acne improves but if it doesn't you should see your doctor to discuss causes and treatment options. ...Read more
