Are statins safe?

Yes: Statin medications used to treat high cholesterol are considered safe. As with all medications and medical procedures, we weigh the risks vs. The benefits. The risks of statins is very low (may adversely affect the liver but this is rare) and the benefits are great (significant reduction in heart disease and stroke.) discuss this with your doctor, in light of your individual medical conditions. ...Read more

I have moderately elevated cholesterol levels, and am prescribe statin drugs. Which control it nicely, but cause erectile dysfunction. Alternatives?

Different dose or me: Compliance with medication is affected when problems arise, especially ed. Try switching to a different statin, lower the dose & combine with another cholesterol medication. Consider a stress test b/c ED and coronary artery blockage are connected. Decrease your animal fat including dairy and eat more plants. Statins are prescribed to control trygl. Longer usage of the drug is creating stress of the chest muscles.Yet times really unbearble.Adv what to do?

Stop the statin.: Statins are not the best treatment for elevated triglycerides. The cause of your chest pain needs further evaluation and is not likely due to the statin. Your doctor can check your muscle enzymes to see if there are signs of muscle inflammation. Further history about your symptoms and perhaps cardiac evaluation are needed. It is important to know if your symptoms resolve with discontinuation. ...Read more

Is it true that statins are just as effective if you take them every other day versus every day?

No...but: Statins are designed to be taken daily. There are however instances where periodic dosing is used to reduced side effects in individuals who did not tolerate daily dosing. Different statins are metabolized differently. In my practice we use intermittent Crestor (rosuvastatin) dosing frequently. Please consult with your physician to tailor a regimen that works best for you. ...Read more

No,and maybe: Stains will significantly lower LDL and stabilize plaques and may even cause regression of the plaque. Primary prevention with statins is also well documented. No other agent or class has this data. 30 percent is not bad due to the fact its not blocking flow but can rupture and cause a heart attack. ...Read more

If I have had serious muscle and joint pain in my thighs and knees from taking different statin drugs, is there any statin drug that i can safely take?

Probably not: Most people with statin induced muscle pain will have it from all statins. There are other types of choelsterol lowering drugs that are not statins that can be tried including niacin. All drugs, however do have side effects so it can be difficult to find one you tolerate. ...Read more

If im taking statin pills and my liver enzymes are elevated is it dangerous? What will it do in the long run?

It depends: Mild elevation of liver enzymes is common and usually not serious. However large elevations (which are rare) should prompt discontinuation of the drug. A review of your baseline cholesterol and your risk factors for coronary or other vascular disease is needed. Talk to your doctor! ...Read more

Statins (Definition)

Several drugs exist which lower cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in liver cells (hmg-coa reductase) that is involved in cholesterol synthesis. These all have generic names that end in -statin, e.g. Atorvastatin (lipitor) and Simvastatin (zocor). Since nearly all of the meds in this class have been shown to have similar cardiovascular benefits, we often discuss them ...Read more
