Ear Wax (Definition)

Ear wax in the ear canal is a mixture of secretions from oil and sweat glands in the canal's skin. Shedded skin cells are also a major ingredient of ear wax. There are two genetically determined types of ear wax: the wet type and the dry type. While Asians and Native Americans are more likely to have the dry type (crumbly, flaky), Africans and Europeans are more likely to have the ...Read more

George had a TEE 2days ago. It took 3 tries to get into his esophogus. He has had problems, lots of pink mucus. An MRI shows a hole in his pharanx.

That's NOT GOOD: If the instrument used for the Trans-esophageal echo perforated the pharynx this needs surgical evaluation! I assume however that the "hole" is not "thru and thru" but rather a small "hole" in the mucous membrane! Follow the endocopist's instruction and if there is no follow-up appointment ...get one! My 6 week old baby is dribbling a lot, does this mean he's teething? He was born with a tooth but it got pulled out due to being loose.

Not necessarily: Drooling is common during early infancy because they have no social conscience. They are not concerned about the dribble. It can increase anytime there is mouth irritation. I'm not convinced that the average kid experiences any significant "teething" discomfort for most of their dental eruptions. It is a good excuse people use for random fussiness that is common to the age group. ...Read more

My son 30 was turned down for a keratoma in left ear, navy. How serious is this surgery. He told them he had hearing loss before his first test?

Depends: Is this a cholesteatoma? If so, this is a surgery that necessitates typically 2 surgeries done on an outpatient basis separated by 6-12 months. If done by an experienced otologist/neurotologist, this is a routine procedure with return to most acitivites after a few days. ...Read more

My Son (4 mo) couldn't passed 1st hearing test probably OAE in both ear, what are the chances that he will pass AABR test at 6 month?

Good: Hearing is screened routinely at birth in the US. Between 2 and 10 percent of infants do not pass the initial test, OAE, and go on to a repeat test later. Most will pass the second test and the ones who do not go on to ABR. Of all newborns tested, only 1 percent or fewer will have significant hearing loss. Risk is increased if there is a family history of deafness. ...Read more

My husband had our doctor do an ear irrigation, and now he is has very clogged ears, is this normal?Did the doc damage his ears? Any home remedies?

Probably temporary: You don't say how long it has been since the procedure was performed or what the method was. Often a water jet irrigator with a special tip is used, which is safer than a metal syringe. Unfortunately, complications can occur including irritation of the ear canal, likely the case for your husband, or even perforation which would be more painful. No specific remedy. Return for eval to doc/ENT. ...Read more

I have a two year old with language delay. ENT doctor said he pressure in his ears was abnormal but he had no fluid. Very confused what this means?

Need ABR: I think the ENT doctor probably means that there is negative pressure in the middle ear. This may be present in the absence of middle ear fluid. The negative pressure should not cause a language delay. Although this may be normal at this age, the best thing to do is to have an auditory brain stem response (ABR). This test can be performed by an audiologist. Results can prove normal hearing. ...Read more

An ear tube that has been in my one ear for 15 years just fell out with a lot of ear wax. Doctors have always seen it. Should i be worried? No pain

No: Ear tubes typically fall out with the natural motion of wax in about 6 months. That your's has been in for 15 years suggests it may have been a t-tube (longer lasting). You may want to have your doctor check your ear to make sure there is no residual hole in the ear drum that needs repair. Watch for pain or drainage from the ear. ...Read more

Earwax impaction. What causes? Is it common to get impacted earwax 3 times year. Almost every 4 months I have needed dr to remove very painful wax.

Other helpful ways: Some people have the type of ear wax that builds up, while others do not. Some people "clean" their ears but unintentionally are pushing their wax further upstream. Wax is oily and more liquid in some people (and doesn't form a big lump), but wax is dry and hard in other people (forming a lump)... these qualities are genetic. Debrox drops, used on one or two days each month, can prevent build-up. ...Read more

Expected: It doesn't sound out of the ordinary, especially if you have hard wax stuck in the canal. Please follow the instructions and go back for completion.
