Bile induced IBS after gallbladder removal?? True?? Best med for diarrhea cholestyramine after gb removal?

Yes but will resolve: After gallbladder surgery, some people have ongoing abdominal symptoms, such as pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea (postcholecystectomy syndrome). Following cholecystectomy, bile which was once stored in the gallbladder and released only after meals, now flows continuously into the intestines and cause irritation. Cholestyramine absorbs bile, but these symptoms will often resolve over time. ...Read more

I was told I would not need digestive enzymes/bile salts after gallbladder removal...Why then do naturopaths promote taking them? What is best?

Training: You do not need them. Naturopaths are trained differently and so are thought the you do, though there is no scientific evidence to back that. The gallbadder is like a reservoir only. It only is a storage site. The salts, etc, are still produced and released whether there or not. ...Read more

I have severe diarrhea after gallbladder removal. Questrin and whelcol helps for a short time but still have major problems with diarrhea?

I have severe diarrhea after gallbladder removal. Questrin and whelcol helps for a short time but still have major problems with diarrhea?

Bile diarrhea: After gallbladder removal or ERCP sphincterotomy bile enters the upper intestine more freely. Bile can be irritating to the intestine and colon in some people and you may be one of those sensitive to bile. Questran (cholestyramine) is a bile binder and usually manages this type of diarrhea. You may increase your questran (cholestyramine). Okay to check with your surgeon and GI doc about this problem. ...Read more

Recommendation regarding using ox bile after gallbladder removal for omega 3 absorption as well as vitamin a d, k.?

Not needed: Your liver makes plenty of bile. The gallbladder just stores it. Is diahrrea a natural thing after gallbladder removal?

Is diahrrea a natural thing after gallbladder removal?

Common: About 20% of people will have diarrhea (early on) especially after eating fatty food. The gallbladder's function is to store bile and deliver it to the intestine to absorb fats. Most people w/stones have lost this storage function prior to its removal and don't miss this function. For those that do develop diarrhea, many eventually adjust or they may take bile salts by mouth to compensate. ...Read more

I got my gallbladder removed about 3 years ago. Today I woke up feeling nauses and started to vomit. I have bile in my vomit and diarrhea. Help?

Doubt it's related: Seeing bile in vomitus is common because bile is often in the stomach (it percolates upstream about 4 inches into the stomach). It is unlikely to be related to your prior surgery. The good news is that if you do see bile, it means the "main" bile duct is not obstructed. I'd look for other causes of n/v. (viral, food poisoning, flu, etc.). ...Read more

Retained stone: Your doctor is making sure you don't have a stone in your common bile duct. It is unlikely but possible. If your enzymes are elevated he/she may want to further study you. You need to avoid dehydration first. If you are holding down food for the most part then you will continue to follow up. Your surgeon who removed the gallbladder will want to know that you had this problem so call please. ...Read more

Try cholestyramine: If he diarrhea came after the gallbladder removal, it is unusual but may be caused by bile reaching the colon faster and may be controlled or eliminated by cholestyramine. On the other hand, if the diarrhea is caused by dietary factors, the drug will not solve the problem. Dietary experimentation may be what you need. ...Read more
