It can be: The big bumps on the back of your tongue are probably your taste buds. It's not uncommon for the tongue to become coated with a cold, because your immune system is under attack and this gives the bacteria on the tongue a free pass to multiply and grow. You can just brush the surface of your tongue every day and that will help eliminate the coating. ...Read more

Possibly related: One of the causes of bumps on the tongue and sore throat would be oral thrush or a yeast/fungal infection. This is more likely after antibiotic use when the bacterial flora in the mouth/body is altered. It might also represent an unusual form of drug allergy, or just be normal. I would probably ask my doctor to have a look at them. Good luck! ...Read more

See Doc: You could have strep throat, or another bacterial or viral illness. You do not want to miss a diagnosis of strep because treatment is essential to prevent complications. Take some tylenol or ibuprofen (with food and only if no nausea, vomiting or diarrhea) tonight and see your doc or to to an UC center to get checked. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read more

I have white tongue, sore throat and bumps on the back of the tongue. What should I do?

I have white tongue, sore throat and bumps on the back of the tongue. What should I do?

Several issues: The white tongue could be from a coating that can be removed with better oral hygiene and a tongue scraper....Or lichen planus, thrush or something else. The bumps may be the normal papillae of the tongue. A sore throat is not normal. I suggest that you consult with an oral surgeon or your physician for a personal evaluation to see exactly what is going on and treatment if indicated. ...Read more

Could a large solid bump at the base of my tongue be a tumor? It is far back, almost into my throat and touch my uvula. I have a sore throat too and my tongue is a little sore. I have noticed it before but it seemed to have gone away.

Need Consultation: Too many variables present to just wait. Get and appointment with and oral surgeon for an evaluation (possible biopsy) of this bump. This may be a nuisance or it could be very serious. However the serious side is significant to warrant to know what it is now ! ...Read more
