Should i try beta blockers for anxiety/migraines?

Should i try beta blockers for anxiety/migraines?

Situationally: Beta blockers prevent the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, thus preventing anxiety symptoms like racing heart and clammy hands. This, in turn, prevents anxiety feedback to the brain. However, beta blockers are best used situationally, rather than in an ongoing way. For more systemic pharmaceutical treatment, you can use ssris or benzodiazapines. Best of all is good talk therapy. ...Read more

Beta blockers for anxiety/migraines, does this work?

No/Yes: Beta blockers do not help symptoms of anxiety. Sometimes they will blunt the effect stress may have on your heart by blocking the same receptors that 'adrenaline-like' hormones work on. There has been many years of use to prevent migraines, particularly with propanolol which is an older generation of beta blockers. They have been known to reduce migraines. ...Read more

Why and how can beta blockers increase depression and anxiety in some people?

Experts don't know: Depression is known to be in the top 3 side effects, but how? Is unknown. Beta-blockers 'sit' on beta-adrenergic receptors and stop them from being stimulated. So, perhaps some need not to be stopped to maintain good mood. They are actually used to treat symptoms of anxiety! work hard w/ your dr to avoid piling up side effects. If non-drug alternatives exist, try them! ...Read more

Why is it that beta blockers can possibly cause anxiety? Inderal (propranolol) was used years ago in the theatre to treat anxiety.

Anxiety and Anxiety: First, you are correct. Propranolol, a beta blocker, at an extremely low dose is the most commonly prescribed medication for 'performance' anxiety. It blunts the heart from the emotional response when one is nervous and has to keep a clear head when performing. I understand beta blockers are sometimes prescribed for anxiety. I take coreg (carvedilol) for hbp. I also have gad. Will this medication help gad?

A little: It tends to help anxiety because it suppresses the body's reaction to adrenaline (such as palpitations), which only makes us more anxious, so it can help break a vicious cycle. And that's why it's used for stage fright. But that may not be enough to full control gad. ...Read more

Some do: Betablockers that cross the blood brain barrier are good for panic and stage freight (and have an actual approved indication for this) while selective bbs do not. Propranolol crosses well, while atenolol crosses poorly. Metoprolol is intermediate. Can I take a lemsip while on beta blockers . I last had a beta blocker yest morning 20mg . Have been prescribed them for anxiety?

Yes but: Lemsip has phenylephrine ( a decongestant) which is a little like "adrenaline" so the beta blocker will prevent it from doing much good. The combination won't harm you but taking them together is somewhat irrational. The ingredients in Lemsip are paracetamol and phenylephrine so you could just take the paracetamol separately ...Read more

Anxiety disorder, dr. Suggests beta blockers to help exercise w/o panic, doesn't tell me much about them, google not comforting. What'll these do?

Talk to your doctor.: Beta blockers are usually used for performance anxiety such as public speaking, etc. Usually the doses given in these situations are low compared to those used to treat high blood pressure. Deep breathing, mindfulness ; self-talk might be better for anxiety during exercise. ...Read more
