Things don't sit: Stuff doesn't sit around in the colon. If constipated, one needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber+water, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... Adequate hydration (plenty of fluids), fiber, and stimulation of the colon will usually solve the problem. Magnesium helps many people. You can't "od" on magnesium, because it will cause diarrhea. Usually, 500-1, 500 mg will get you moving. Some people can handle more. Prunes are also a good stimulant. ...Read more

Not necessary: Intestinal tract normally cleans itself. Many people require laxatives or stool softners if bowels can not be regulated by diet alone.
