Don't overthink it: As a swimmer, and triathlete myself, I can tell you that supplements don't make or break you. It's a huge moneymaking industry that does very little good. At best, you can find something that's not harmful. Best bet is to eat balanced meals with protein and minimal processed sugars. I do use recovery supplements after heavy workouts. None: Performance enhancing steroids and others will get you in trouble. Eat a variety of greens, fruits, vegetables. Load with carbs well before any endurance event.
