Should I take probiotics 2-3 hours before antibiotics or should I take them after? What would be the best?

Probiotics: Are best taken 30 minutes prior to a meal or with a meal that has some fat content. Peace and good health. I see muscle twitching in your history. You can speak w/your doc about getting your magnesium level checked.

Been getting sick a lot (2-4 monthly). Was given antibiotics several times. I'm doing my best to get healthier now. Would a probiotic be a good idea? Tips?

Probiotics: Antibiotics kill off bad bacteria, but also the beneficial bacteria of the bowel. When taking antibiotics and for several months afterward it is a good idea to replace the good bowel bacteria with probiotics daily. You can buy these at your health food store, and ask for probiotics that can survive being killed off by your stomach acid, so they can survive to reach the colon.

Can I take a probiotic to stop a yeast infection? If not, what's the best OTC treatment? Been on antibiotics for 2 weeks & I think that caused it.

Can I take a probiotic to stop a yeast infection? If not, what's the best OTC treatment? Been on antibiotics for 2 weeks & I think that caused it.

Probiotic won't work: If you have had vaginal yeast and have the same symptoms now, you probably can safely treat yourself. A probiotic probably won't work; you need an anti-yeast drug. Look for a product whose active ingredient ends in "azole" (Monistat®, Terazol®, Gyne-Lotrimin® and others). But if in doubt, get advice from the doc that prescribed the antibiotic. If you self treat, call doc if no better in 2-3 days.

Which probiotic strain is best for post antibiotic (flagyl-cipro) therapy of sibo. Also highly lactose intol. Sibo symptoms returned very quickly.

Which probiotic strain is best for post antibiotic (flagyl-cipro) therapy of sibo. Also highly lactose intol. Sibo symptoms returned very quickly.

Probiotics: There are several high potency probiotics available, such as klaire complete, and orthobiotic, two of my favorites. A good post antibiotic restorative probiotic should have at least 4 strains of acidophillus and bifido bacteris, and a friendly competitor for candida, like florastor. Ortho biotic has all of those in one supplement. The other thing to look for is billions of cfu (cocloies).

After a few round of antibiotics, my gut flora is shot. Antibiotics by mouth give me bad watery stools. What is the best probiotic to restore gutflora?

Any: First make sure diarrhea is not caused by super infection. You can take any probiotic that you can afford. They all work the same. Add yogurt drinks like Kefir that have probiotics in them.

Can you take probiotics with antibiotics?

Can you take probiotics with antibiotics?

Absolutely: 19 year old lady with a question about taking probiotics during a course of oral antibiotics. You can take probiotics during your antibiotic therapy. The probiotic will not stop the antibiotic from being absorbed and doing its job. In addition, probiotics are beneficial in reestablishing the balance that may or may not be disturbed by the antibiotics. I recommend taking the probiotic 1 hr after.

Can I take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time during the day?

Can I take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time during the day?

Yes: Probiotics are given to patients who are receiving antibiotics because they have been shown to decrease the incidence of antibiotic associated diarrhea and possible decrease the incidence of c. Difficile colitis. You can take them both at the same time but it would be better if you took the probiotics 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking the antibiotics.

Is it recommended to take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time?

Is it recommended to take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time?

Different things: Antibiotics kill or inhibit bacterial growth. Some probiotics are actually bacterial colonies such as in yogurt that promote valuable bodily functions. Different bacteria are either sensitive to or resistant to antibiotics. Probiotics are often prescribed to correct antibiotic-induced diarrhea.

What are some pros/cons of ultraflora probiotics after being on antibiotics?

What are some pros/cons of ultraflora probiotics after being on antibiotics?

All pros but...: We have trillions of friendly bacteria in our GI tract. Antibiotics kill many of these ; allow yeast ; unfriendly bacteria to overgrow. Ultraflora is a high-quality probiotic that will help to replenish some of the healthy flora killed by antibiotics. There are no cons except it may not be enough to fully restore your flora ; it's wise to not wait til after antibiotics but to take during ; after.

How much probiotic should I take when I'm taking 500 mg of antibiotic? Thanks

How much probiotic should I take when I'm taking 500 mg of antibiotic? Thanks

The probiotic dose: And duration of treatment isn't known for sure. However, if you use a probiotic, you should start it at the same time as you start the antibiotic. Probiotic species like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium & Sarcomycetes are perfectly safe to ingest as long as you have a healthy immune system. We just don't know if they're effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

How long do I take a probiotic for antibiotics, a few days beyond the antibiotics?

That's good: I usually recommend taking probiotics for 5 days after the completion of an antibiotic course. There is no science behind this, just my anecdotal clinical experience.
