Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. Should I take probiotics 2-3 hours before antibiotics or should I take them after? What would be the best?
Been getting sick a lot (2-4 monthly). Was given antibiotics several times. I'm doing my best to get healthier now. Would a probiotic be a good idea? Tips?
Probiotics: Antibiotics kill off bad bacteria, but also the beneficial bacteria of the bowel. When taking antibiotics and for several months afterward it is a good idea to replace the good bowel bacteria with probiotics daily. You can buy these at your health food store, and ask for probiotics that can survive being killed off by your stomach acid, so they can survive to reach the colon. ...Read more

Can I take a probiotic to stop a yeast infection? If not, what's the best OTC treatment? Been on antibiotics for 2 weeks & I think that caused it.
Probiotic won't work: If you have had vaginal yeast and have the same symptoms now, you probably can safely treat yourself. A probiotic probably won't work; you need an anti-yeast drug. Look for a product whose active ingredient ends in "azole" (Monistat®, Terazol®, Gyne-Lotrimin® and others). But if in doubt, get advice from the doc that prescribed the antibiotic. If you self treat, call doc if no better in 2-3 days. ...Read more
Which probiotic strain is best for post antibiotic (flagyl-cipro) therapy of sibo. Also highly lactose intol. Sibo symptoms returned very quickly.
Probiotics: There are several high potency probiotics available, such as klaire complete, and orthobiotic, two of my favorites. A good post antibiotic restorative probiotic should have at least 4 strains of acidophillus and bifido bacteris, and a friendly competitor for candida, like florastor. Ortho biotic has all of those in one supplement. The other thing to look for is billions of cfu (cocloies). ...Read more

Absolutely: 19 year old lady with a question about taking probiotics during a course of oral antibiotics. You can take probiotics during your antibiotic therapy. The probiotic will not stop the antibiotic from being absorbed and doing its job. The probiotic dose: And duration of treatment isn't known for sure. However, if you use a probiotic, you should start it at the same time as you start the antibiotic. Probiotic species like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium & Sarcomycetes are perfectly safe to ingest as long as you have a healthy immune system. We just don't know if they're effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. ...Read more

Probiotics: No it is not bad, although most probiotics are bacteria which are sensitive to the antibiotic being used and will therefore be killed along with the intestinal flora. There are some probiotics, like Saccharomyces boulardi, which will survive antibiotic exposure. Caution must be used if the patient is immunosuppressed, because there have been reports of sepsis due to the bacteria in probiotics. ...Read more
