ACCUTANE?: For severe acne, Accutane is usually the treatment of choice but should be administered and monitored by a physician. Occasion al cysts will benefit from drainage.

Diet (Definition)

Refers to all the physical matter humans (like all living creatures) must take in on a recurring basis; only partially for energy. Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Intestinal lining cells replaced ~every 3 days. CaPO4 in bones ~every 6 years, ...Read more

Get another doctor: Forgive my frankness. Cystic acne is a mutilating illness and a grave personal and professional liability. Trying to manage acne with diet is seldom useful. Get with someone who knows their stuff and can decide whether to start right up with isotretinoin, or try a mix with antibiotics, topical agents, and/or hormone Rx / spironolactone.

I'm 37 and suddenly breaking out with cystic acne all over my face (norm 1-2 a month on chin). No change in diet or lifestyle. Why now? How to treat?

Hormonal, stress: Acne is one of those things that is always waiting there to attack if you give it a chance. So depending on hormonal changes in some, stress in others, it can erupt. Often times it is self limited and will improve with some time. Now, if you do not want to wait there are always skin care products and medications to help. See your physician or specialist for more info.

I am a 23 yr old female with moderate cystic acne. What is the best course to take to control it?

I am a 23 yr old female with moderate cystic acne. What is the best course to take to control it?

Acne: Acne can be treated by your dermatologist. You will not be able to cure it by yourself if you have a bad case. It requires internal antibiotic therapy that must be monitored and adjusted according to your response. It is better not to delay effective treatment by trying different things at home because each pimple and cyst you get can form a permanent scar and it's expensive to fix the scarring.

Best oral antibiotic for cystic acne & its dose?

Best oral antibiotic for cystic acne & its dose?

This is serious: I'm glad you're on benzoyl peroxide. Adding an antibiotic may help some; I would suggest simple tetracycline. However, this is unlikely to clear up real cystic acne. Especially at age 22, acne is a grave social and professional liability. You need to consider isotretinoin, even if you're read "how horrible it is." It is worth the risk, used with proper guidance. Best wishes.

What is the best solution to get rid of cystic acne?

Second opinion: If Isotretinoin has failed, it's possible you have one of the mimics rather than classic acne, especially at your age. I also trust you do not have sapho syndrome. Please get with a skin specialist.

Is clarithromycin the best oral antibiotic for a single, deep &tender hormonal cystic acne lesion? The 5 day script I've taken hasn't healed it. Thanks

Is clarithromycin the best oral antibiotic for a single, deep &tender hormonal cystic acne lesion? The 5 day script I've taken hasn't healed it. Thanks

Cyst: No antibiotic is the best and most of the time cystic lesion like you describe may need to be lanced and drained, try some warm compresses also, it may help for cyst to come close to the skin surface and drain on its own

What helps best for cystic acne? Probiotics or evening primerose? Currently taking Spironolactone, Aczone, & genetic tazorac (tazarotene).

What helps best for cystic acne? Probiotics or evening primerose? Currently taking Spironolactone, Aczone, & genetic tazorac (tazarotene).

Adjuncts only: Sandy, forgive my frankness. I'm not a dermatologist, but if a retinoid (tazorac), dapsone, and spironolactone have failed, you need to consider isotetinoin therapy despite all the scare stuff you've read on the doctor-bashing websites. Acne is a grave personal and professional liability. You're an adult now, you have job interviews coming up, and it's probably the right choice.

How can I treat cystic acne at home?

How can I treat cystic acne at home?

Forgive my frankness: Cystic acne is a brutal disease that gravely disfigures you now and will leave your skin permanently mutilated. You can't treat it on you own, and if your parents are interfering with your desire for effective therapy, pick up the phone and call your physician. Despite all the internet scare stuff, Isotretinoin is by far the most effective medication. It's not for sissies, but it's what you need.

Cystic Acne: Severe acne is characterized by deep cysts, inflammation, extensive damage to the skin and scarring. It requires an aggressive treatment regimen and should be treated by a dermatologist. See a dermatologist: Home remedies don't work too well. You can try an over the counter cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide but that may not be enough. I suggest you see your dermatologist for proper evaluation and treatment.

How can you treat cystic acne from home?

Not recommended: Treating cystic acne with home remedies may lead to permanent scarring, infection and may even lead to brain infection and blood vessel infarction. A dermatologist or a family doctor who has a calling for acne should be consulted as there are many forms of available medical therapies. The doctor may even be able to provide you some tips you can use at home to help tackle the problem better.

How can you remove persistent cystic acne?

How can you remove persistent cystic acne?

Hard core Rx: This will respond well only to isotretinoin. Adjunct topical antibiotics & perhaps spironolactone may help as well. Nothing else will touch it and you'll repeat the course of rx over the years until it remits. It's not cheap, pleasant or risk-free but it is usually well worth it.

What can I do for cystic acne? Any home remedies?

No: Deep cystic acne always requires an rx, and probably you will go on at least a systemic antibiotic, which is generally safe. Dermatologists have big guns for this. This is the 21st century and you do not have to endure this if you do not want it. Stay proactive and you are almost certain of getting a good result.

How to consume dairy without getting cystic acne?

How to consume dairy without getting cystic acne?

Whoa: Dairy does seem to exacerbate acne in some people, but your real question should be, "How do I manage acne which in my case has been very severe? " I'll assume you're using topical benzoyl peroxide and you also need to be under the care of a competent physician who knows how to give systemic Rx. If you are offered isotretinoin, give serious considerating to doing it. It's your body / future.
