Best Cough Syrup For Infants
My daughter's pediatrician prescribed her Bromfed (brompheniramine) dm cough syrup as needed for cough and she is only 2 yrs old. Is this cough syrup bad for her?
Not recommended: The fda, as well as the aap do not recommend cough/cold products for young children, as they have not been shown to be effective, and may have side effects. I'd suggest vaporizer, fluids, suction nose with saline, and if over 1 yr, a tsp of honey. Don't use honey if less than 1yr, as there is a risk of botulism. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Avoid Cold medicines: Cough in young children is extremely frustrating for parents. Unfortunately cough medications used in adults don't work in children. Decongestants in combination with cough medications can actually be harmful. Using guafenesin may be helpful to help secretions stay loose. Increasing fluid intake and humidity in the air can definitely help. Honey (for kids over 12 months) may be a natural remedy. ...Read more
Would it be a problem to mix Robitussin (guaifenesin) cough syrup and equate cough syrup together?
Mixing meds: I would not advise it. If you are having to mix them or exceed the recommended dose for symptom relief then you should speak with your doctor. ...Read more
I never do: Most of these contain antihistamines that will thicken their mucus, which is not what a croup kid needs.A simple guaifenesin only product might help loosen the mucus. For most of these kids I just try to keep them hydrated and occasionally use an oral steroid for the worst cases. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Cough: It would be preferable to give ventolin for acute relief of symptoms & to continue beclazone as a controller medication. If there are any signs of respiratory distress (difficulty speaking, fast breathing, retractions etc.) or lack of response to therapy, please talk to your doctor immediately or take your child to the nearest emergency room for evaluation & treatment. ...Read more
Cough syrup, Nosal drop and steam are not affecting much for my 1 month infant, can I give him nebulizer with saline water.
?irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages exposure to dust, fragrances, smoke & other irritants. This often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & SUCTIONING the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less. Cough syrups make them worse.Nasal drops without suction are a waste of time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it ok to take Bromfed (brompheniramine) dm cough syrup with infant acetaminophen? Is there a waiting period before giving between the two?
No cough syrup: There have been a number of studies showing that children's cough and cold medicines do not help and in some cases, children experience unpleasant side effects. What's best remedy for weather-change triggered wet cough? I have been taking cough syrup, not very effective!
Can my 6 month old baby use cold and cough syrup if so what do u recommend for him concerned mother
I wouldn't: The nasal & airway structure of young infants is quite different from older kids or adults. Studies have shown no benefit of cough/cold preparations to kids under 6. They also reflect a large number of ER visits and poison control calls from these meds. If you need something to do, keep track of fluid intake. That is more important overall & more likely to help baby. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

It happens: The rash may be from the illness or a reaction to one of the medicines. The cough med can make baby irritable & does little. The antibiotic might be needed if there really is a bacterial infection but most of these are viral, the antibiotic may trigger an allergic rash. Your choices are difficult. Either continue, stop all meds & see what happens, or go back to the doc. ...Read more
