Best Cough Syrup For Infants
Cough syrup, Nosal drop and steam are not affecting much for my 1 month infant, can I give him nebulizer with saline water.
? irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages exposure to dust, fragrances, smoke & other irritants. This often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & SUCTIONING the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less. Cough syrups make them worse. Nasal drops without suction are a waste of time. ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Is it ok to take Bromfed (brompheniramine) dm cough syrup with infant acetaminophen? Is there a waiting period before giving between the two?
No cough syrup: There have been a number of studies showing that children's cough and cold medicines do not help and in some cases, children experience unpleasant side effects. It can be frustrating to deal with a cough, especially at night. Saline nasal spray, humidified air, or sleeping with the head somewhat propped up using extra pillows works for some. ...Read more

I gave my 18months baby a cough syrup prospan (dried ivy leaf extract for 3 days &found out that I should have shaked the bottle. Did I harm my baby?
Cough syrups: No cough medication has been safely approved for children at that age. At this time the american academy of pediatrics recommends honey in children over a year old for cough relief. I am not familiar with ivy leaf extract so I can't give you a final answer on it but definitely can advise you not to use any meds that have not been recommended by your pediatritian. If it was px call prescriber x advise. ...Read more

What's best remedy for weather-change triggered wet cough? I have been taking cough syrup, not very effective!
Can my 6 month old baby use cold and cough syrup if so what do u recommend for him concerned mother
I wouldn't: The nasal & airway structure of young infants is quite different from older kids or adults. Studies have shown no benefit of cough/cold preparations to kids under 6. They also reflect a large number of ER visits and poison control calls from these meds. If you need something to do, keep track of fluid intake. That is more important overall & more likely to help baby. ...Read more
Is phenergan (promethazine) cough syrup safe for 1 month old baby, because she is giving us sleepless nites?
Not knowing I was pregnant, at 4 weeks, got a bad cold, took neocitran once, Advil (ibuprofen) nightime once, cough syrup a few times. This early on, did I hurt baby?
Maybe so, maybe not.
Depends on the child, why he/she is coughing and the cough syrup. There are many illnesses that cause cough. Best to see your doctor about any significant cough so that the cause is found and proper medicine can be given. For minor coughs honey in hot herb tea is soothing for children over 1 year of age. ...Read more
Potentially: Cough syrups may contain a variety of active ingredients such as first generation antihistamines, mucolytics (break up mucus), cough suppressants (dextromethorphan), narcotics (codeine) and alcohol. While most people tolerate these just fine and the cough improves, I prefer to treat the "cause" of the cough rather than just the suppress symptoms. Be careful with any and all medications! ...Read more

Several reasons: Cough syrup (cough suppressant) only treats the cough and not the underlying condition that is "causing" the cough. Also, some cough syrups contain narcotic medication which can lead to addiction. In the long run, it is a good idea to avoid medications with addiction potential. ...Read more

Codeine: I think the best cough syrup for a nine year old whose cough is a post nasal drip and interfering with sleep, both the nine year olds and his parents, is something like Robitussin with Codeine which is available as a generic and though it does not taste very good is usually very effective. I would start with a teaspoon of honey first for milder cases before the codeine. ...Read more
