Benzos aren't a cure: I agree with dr. Ali. Benzodiazapines numb you to your anxiety but they don't address the underlying cause. They can also be very addicting. A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor would be a class of medication that could help with the underlying neurochemical problems but psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy would actually start to give you control. It depends: Rebound anxiety is not inevitable, although there are many individuals who do experience it. A lot depends on the rate of tapering, the dosage before tapering, how long someone has been taking the medication and the severity of their anxiety. Sedating antihistamines like vistiril (hydroxyzine) are non-addictive & thus preferable if they do the job. But the truth is, for most people benzodiazepines are more effective.
