Does having a tumor (malignant or benign) usually lead to weight loss?

Does having a tumor (malignant or benign) usually lead to weight loss?

It depends: Larger or more aggressive cancers are the type of cancers more typically associated with weight loss. Smaller tumors that maybe cured by local treatment (e.g. Surgery) often have no symptoms and frequently are not associated with weight loss. Unfortunately some cancers (lung cancer and pancreatic cancer) are not found until late and the initial presenting symptom may be weight loss. ...Read more

For 55+ F (5.2 ft & 68.9 kg) with 5-10% weight loss over 6-12 months along with Hb 10.6 & Pt 1.2 L, what type of tumor/cancers should be ruled out?

Why cancer: Why you are concern about cancer, is it the weight loss 10 %? over 12 months is very normal how is your appetite. If you have an adrenal tumor, does weight loss signify development of cancer?

If you have an adrenal tumor, does weight loss signify development of cancer?

Not usually: Assuming that you have had a ct showing a mass in your adrenal it should be worked up to make sure that it is not producing hormones and has no radiographic signs of cancer (and is not more than 5cm in size). If all of these are ok, then it is a benign "incidentaloma" and may be followed with ct. Your weight loss should not be related unless you have another cancer metastatic to adrenal (unlikely). ...Read more

Needs further evalua: This person should see a Medical doctor (Internist) or a specialist (like a Hematologist) to sort out the cause of her anemia and low platelet count.
I would recommend a repeat CBC, Differential count and platelet count be done and send us those results. If the numbers are same or lower, then she must get a medical check up and rule out a Bone marrow disorder/Blood disorder ...Read more

Are tumors in small cell lung cancer tiny making it hard to diagnose. I have had a negative CTscan but still worried to due to fatigue and weight loss?

Stop worrying: It's the cells that are small, not the tumors. Incipient lung cancers may be there but they're not making you sick yet. Do you have Addison's? Gluten enteropathy? Any of dozens of others? Worrying accomplishes nothing. Rechannek that energy into smoking cessation, exercising, and/or continuing your work up as applicable. Best wishes. ...Read more

I had a ct scan because I thought I had a seizure nothing showed up on the scan is it possible they missed a tumor? I have apathy, tired, weight loss

Possible: For tumor identification, a CT scan or an MRI with contrast should be done. Was your scan done with contrast? If it was with contrast and still negative, you should follow up with an EEG - if abnormal you should then get an MRI. With your symptoms, certain labs may provide information as well. Please be sure to get a referral for a neurologist for further workup. ...Read more

Would you operate on a 85 yr man with chf, for tumor w/cancer in sigmoid colon, 80 pd weight loss, bad ekg too, worried he won't make it, what chance?

Complicated Question: There's not enough space in this forum to answer a complex question like this. There are many nuances... how bad is the CHF? (ie, What is the NYHA Stage? What is the EF?) How large / problematic is the cancer? What type of cancer? (adenocarcinoma,? squamous?) What is the Grade and Stage of the cancer? (They're not the same thing). Hopefully a surgical oncologist is helping guide the pt. I feel 4u. ...Read more

I feel tingles, some weakness & pain in right arm;pain in neck &some headaches;weight loss & plugged ear. Could it be brain tumor? I've TMJ and anxiety

Pain in arm or neck: Not likely to get pain in the arm or neck from a brain tumor without having signs of brain stem dysfunction. There are other conditions that need to be considered. Chiari malformation can produce tingling in neck and shoulders with headaches. You might have a couple of unrelated problems producing a confusing clinical picture. (separate neck and ear problem). A good examination might be in order. ...Read more

Does fatty liver slow weight loss?

Does fatty liver slow weight loss?

Fat metab affects: The liver is a vital organ ("You can't live without a liver! "); it helps burn fat efficiently. When fat deposits in the liver, fat is burned less efficiently, & it is harder to lose fat/weight. Very often people with fatty liver have slower metabolic rates & insulin resistance which also make it harder to lose. Base your diet on vegetables, healthy protein and good fats: olive oil, nuts, oily fish ...Read more

See doc: Unless one has had weight loss surgery, that amount of unexplained wgt loss in 7 mos is excessive and warrants an investigation by one's doc to make sure that one does not have a serious medical issue causing the wgt loss. If one worked at wgt loss, but it continues despite not attempting to do so, that also warrants investigation by med. Doc. ...Read more

Can doing a liver cleanse help with weight loss?

Think again please: I'M ALL FOR IT IF by "cleanse" you mean adopting a healthy lifestyle with routine exercise, cutting out tobacco, reducing alcohol & sugary drinks, minimizing highly processed foods & fats, & adding in lean proteins, whole fruits, vegetables, & nuts. DON'T DO IT IF instead you mean taking some fad diet, enema, colonic, or purgative to lose weight or supposedly rid your body of unspecified "toxins." ...Read more

What are some good medications for weight loss for people with liver problems?

Don't use meds: Most medications (rx and otc) are metabolized through the liver. See your doctor and get your liver "problems" treated as effectively as you can. Then embark on a well-designed program of healthy nutrition and exercise to safely lose weight, which will help with your fatty liver. Glucose control, if needed, will also be essential. Good luck. ...Read more

See a specialist now: Losing weight too quickly can be a sign of a serious problem. Perhaps it is the fatty liver, but there may be other serious things going on. Please don't wait to talk to your primary care provider and get advice. If that person isn't able to determine the reason for the unintentional weight loss, please see a liver specialist to confirm that this is due to fatty liver. This should not wait. ...Read more

Hi there, I am on 400mg of Lamictal as of last week and now take 450mg of Effexor (venlafaxine) on top. I am worried about my liver but It helps my weight loss woes?

The pill dilemma: We must acknowledge the perspective of individual biology and the issue that some people come from heavy families. Kindness required. That said, if you don't eat it you can't wear it. If you take pills to address the problem you are choosing to accept risks in exchange for choosing to come at the problem this way. There is no free ride, as was revealed in the phen/fen debacle. ...Read more
