Avoid combination: Both Zyrtec & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are antihistamines and as such, should not be taken together in same 24hr period due to potential interactions (http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=896-1617,569-286). It's lousy for severe allergic reactions because it takes days to be fully effective. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) causes drowsiness and only lasts for six hours, but is great for severe allergic reactions and works very quickly.
