Hi, I'm having a spreading swollen reaction to what is probably a bed bug bite (s). Cannot get benadryl, (diphenhydramine) will phenylephrine work to help control it?

No: Phenylepherine is a decongestant not an antihistaminic, so it won't control itching or 'allergic reaction'. If you can't get benadryl (diphenhydramine) for whatever reason right now, try having a shower and apply cold compresses till you see a doctor, good luck ...Read more

INSECT BITE ALLERGY: It depends on the allergic reaction. If it is only itchy bumps, hc cream or other steroids plus Benadryl (diphenhydramine) intake will suffice. If the reaction is severe like anaphylactic shock or angioedema, you need Epipen shots or call 911. ...Read more

Fungal?: When an area gets itchy and swollen plus some pain, there are many potential causes but I think a fungal infection is the most likely cause. However it may be a mixed bacterial and fungal infection as well. See doctor. ...Read more

Eye swelling: If it's just one eye that is swollen and there is associated pain, I'd be concerned about a local infection (periorbital cellulitis). I'd get it looked at ASAP, it may require antibiotics and delay in treatment can have long term consequences. ...Read more

Bug bite to face last night. Today, top lip swollen, aching teeth and headache. Took OTC Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with some help, but symptoms return.

Sounds like allergy: Especially if Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helped, however, if the symptoms are returning, you should most likely be seen in your nearest ER. They can assess your vital signs and determine if stronger meds are needed! ...Read more

I am having a reaction to insect bites. I have Extra Strength Benadryl (diphenhydramine) Nighttime, 1 50mg pill isn't working can I take 2?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): 50mg is the recommended dose but adults can take 400mg in 24 hours. Take 50mg 30 minutes before bedtime and if not effective by 30 minutes repeat the dose. If this is making you drowsy the following day you know it is too much. Your size and weight may have a lot to do with your dose. All the best. ...Read more

Can I inject Benadryl (diphenhydramine) into bug bites? I mean, when they get really itchy, sometimes putting it on the skin doesn't help enough.

Can I inject Benadryl (diphenhydramine) into bug bites? I mean, when they get really itchy, sometimes putting it on the skin doesn't help enough.

No, not for problem: Injection of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is used only for general reactions, not for local reactions such as insect bites. If you develop an anaphylaxis to wasp, honey-bees, or fire-ants, with history of previous systemic reactions affecting the whole body, then it will be indicated. Insect repellents are the best way to go. For local reactions, cortisone creams have helped many patients. ...Read more

Can I inject Benadryl (diphenhydramine) into bug bites with one of those needles diabetic patients use daily? Where can I buy a needle? Would this method soothe itch?

Not good idea.: Don't need to resort to injection! Bug bites will usually respond nicely to oral antihistamines such as Loratadine or fexofenadine without the drowsiness of benadryl (diphenhydramine). Topically you may use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) cream and mid range potency steroids. Pharmacist should be able to point you in the right direction. ...Read more

What type of insect bite gets worse with benadryl, (diphenhydramine) cortisone cream and amoxicillin?

What type of insect bite gets worse with benadryl, (diphenhydramine) cortisone cream and amoxicillin?

Insect bite: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) treats allergic reactions. Amoxicillin treats a small number of bacterial infections, but not all of them. Cortisone cream relieves some inflammatory skin lesions like eczema and poison ivy. Insect bites can lead to any of these problems, and your treatments may be insufficiently powerful. Or maybe it's a staph infection, which is resistant to amoxicillin. ...Read more

My 1yo has bumps around her joints at times like bug bites, on covered/un areas. They don't bother her & go away w/benadryl. What is this?

Difficult to say...: Rashes are undeniably one of the most difficult diagnoses without some visual input. Bumps near joints that go away with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) does not sound serious, bur certainly seems bothersome. Best idea is to take your 1 y/o to the pediatrician, or at least snap a photo on your phone to ask your pediatrician on the next office visit. Is there a dog or kitten in the house? ...Read more
